Newtown Creek (dolphins love it) is following in the footsteps of the raw sewage spewing Gowanus Canal—yesterday the feds made the polluted body of water a Superfund site. It will now be subject to a massive Environmental Protection Agency cleanup, according to the Daily News... one that will likely take many, many years. The EPA's regional administrator declared "this waterway has been contaminated over the past 150 years," and the designation will have them going after those who had a hand in polluting it.

Amongst their unsurprising roster of targets (which will have to help pay for cleanup) are BP, Exxon Mobil, National Grid, Chevron and Phelps Dodge. Here's more on Newtown Creek from the EPA.

Yes, thankfully Bloomberg lost this battle and the feds won meaning that we the taxpayers won because now they'll go after the polluters and make them pay.

Thank goodness, I can soon remove my oxygen mask! The nearby area is so smelley that even my dog would sniff around there. My Right Guard needed a backup.

I hate to break it to you, but you probably won't even be living here anymore by the time Newtown Creek is actually cleaned up.
