Cab Driver Scammed Riders "For Gas Money"

2010_09_gasmoney.jpg Last week, 50 of the worst taxi drivers were arrested for egregiously scamming passengers by overcharging them with out-of-city rates when the fares were just traveling within NYC. The lead offender, Santiago Rossi, pocketed over $11,000; he told the Post, "I did it for the gas money," and said the first overcharged was by accident but "It became a habit." He complained about the meters, "Why didn't the TLC know about the vulnerabilities [of the meters]?" and called the arrests "the TLC's way of not accepting any of the blame for what was happening. They're going to blame the cab drivers and then wash their hands like Pontius Pilate."

Shouldn't someone be on here saying something racist about dirty guineas or WOPs? Man, it's a good thing he wasn't a black guy or the trolls would be all over it.

The thought that this guy has the same right to oxygen as I do... just freak me the f$%k out.

his reasoning ability is warped. it's like a rapist or a burglar blaming police for not catching him sooner

  • I'm a cab driver. I have no sympathy for this guy nor the rest.

The meter is by default set to Rate 1 (city). If you drive out to Nassau County or Westchester, you press the Rate button on the meter and change to Rate 4 when you get to the city limits. As part of the TLC's laws, the meter goes at double speed when you're in Nassau or Westchester, and you're supposed to change to that rate when you pass the city limits.

No cab driver would accidentally hit rate 4 and drive an entire trip. While I have accidentally pressed the button and switched to rate 4 (and others have too), this only happens at the end of the ride when I have already stopped the meter. (The complete button is next to the rate button, so I have pressed it after the total is locked on the screen. This is why the TLC had to retract its claim that millions were overcharged, since the button is pressed somewhat often but the rate never changed). If this guy is pressing the rate button, it's sheer malevolence.

He's an embarrassment to the profession and only makes my job harder. A lot more passengers are arguing with me about the actual fare, even though I'm an honest cabbie. I say throw the book at these people.

    Thank you Sulayman F.

The one thing that guy DOES have going for him is the Pontius Pilate reference. Good quote.

    This man is a waste.
