East Village Manhole Fire Forces Building Evacuations

The Fire Department is responding to multiple manhole fires on East 7th Street between First Avenue and Avenue A. We hear that two buildings (with 18 civilians) were evacuated and Con Ed is also on the scene.

In the past, manhole fires have been caused from things like cables burning out and, during winter months, salt from snowy streets coming into contact with wet wires.

  • I often smell gas coming out the manholes. We reported it once but no one bothered doing anything about it.

This is disturbing - and only one of the many ways Con Edison ruins the neighborhood.
