It's one thing to steal someone's laptop. It's another to sign onto the laptop owner's social network and have the real owner's friend take a Webcam picture of you! Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and East Hampton Town police released this image of a man—plus an image of his bedroom—who allegedly stole a laptop from a home over the summer.

Over $30,000 of items, including laptops and jewelry, were taken from a home in East Hampton on July 29. Then one of the victim's friends chatted him up and took these photos. Detective Christopher Anderson said, "At this point, it is unclear if one or more persons committed the burglary," but added, "At this point, we have every reason to believe he is in one form or another involved in the crime."

"...were taken from a home in East Hampton"

In that case, I'm rooting for the thief.

Oh please. You do realize that most of the people that live in the Hamptons are middle class, right? The people that summer out there are gone by now. The rest of the year it's just a beautiful place to live. Anyway, mature attitude. Ooh, rich people are all evil and deserve to have zitty little punks burglarize them.

    Why's that exactly?

computer is an apple laptop and the program is ichat. i doubt he signed into anything like facebook, but ichat's default setting allows you to sign into you ichat/aim account without retyping your password. he probably opened ichat and it signed him right in, for all the owners friends to see he/she was online and commenced a video chat with him.

also that's not his bedroom. it's the person on the other end of the camera, who would have been viewing him had they not moved away when he accepted the invitation to video chat. apple's ichat program allows it and a preview of the other person is placed in the lower right by default.

It's poorly written, but I think "plus an image of his bedroom" is referring to the bedroom behind him—the one with the lotion and tissues. At least I hope so.

OR, more likely (though much less sensational a story), he bought the laptop on Craigslist from someone claiming to be the owner.

Like the lotion in the background...wonder what he uses that for...
