A young environmental activist from Brooklyn was killed by a tractor trailer in Canada last week. The accident occurred last Thursday afternoon as 23-year-old Andrew Wolf was riding through New Brunswick with a group of other cyclists participating in the Ottawa-based Otesha Project, which promotes environmental responsibility among young people. Wolf was riding with two other cyclists when they were struck by the tractor-trailer; the other two were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident happened on a four-lane stretch of highway with a wide shoulder. Cpl. Robert Landry tells CBC News, "[Thursday] it was a very nice day, it was sunny and very dry. However, there was lots of wind on top of that hill. However, there's nothing else that would be factor, I don't believe." The truck is being inspected for any mechanical failures, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they are considering charges against the driver, though it's too early to say what the charges might be.

One of Wolf's friends, who met him during his internship at a non-profit organization in Washington, D.C., says, "I'm really sad that we can't see what will become of him because I feel like we really lost someone who was really, already, but continuing to make a difference." Wolf's family has set up a memorial fund in his name through Otesha; it "will be used to support passionate young people like Andrew, who are striving to make a difference in the world."
