New Report Alleges Fraud at Vito Lopez Nonprofit

91910lopez.jpg Last week, a damning new report of the nonprofit founded by Democratic Brooklyn party boss Vito Lopez's alleged serious fraud and questionable management, including lucrative payouts to Lopez's girlfriend. The results of the Department of Investigation's report may also have caused a serious schism between old pals Lopez and Mayor Bloomberg.

The DOI probe uncovered at least $343,000 in fraudulent or sketchy claims submitted to the city by the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council and affiliated groups. Workers either falsified attendance sheets, or kept no records, aned one employee at Bushwick's Hope Gardens senior center was arrested for falsifying records; other supervisors double-billed agencies and procured cushy jobs for relatives.

Lopez founded the group, and has no official position in it, but his campaign treasurer Christiana Fisher is the center's director, his girlfriend Angela Battaglia is its housing director, and Lopez helps send taxpayer-funded centers state grants as an assemblyman. He sent $335,000 in state "member item" cash to the group since last year according to the Post. Fisher made $659,591 in "base compensation" last year, only working 17 1/2 hours a week; Battaglia made $329,910, which was 73 percent more than she made two years prior. According to sociologist Nicole Marwell, the group is the hub of Lopez's political machine, providing him with volunteers. It's even closed on Election Day so employees can do get-out-the-vote campaigns

After the report was first released, Lopez allegedly demanded a meeting with Mayor Bloomberg and his team of advisors. When they suggested that the group would have to install real oversight and accept a monitor to examine its books, Lopez stormed out of that meeting. The Daily News calls it his "standard tactic:" ruling by raw threats and fear, even when it involves intimidating old lady pollsters into backing his judicial candidate. But Bloomberg didn't cave to his threats this time, perhaps because in his third term, Bloomberg doesn't need Lopez as much as Lopez needs him.

I like hoe they conveniently waited until after the elections to announce this.

I guess they didn't want to make the Dems look bad.

See this sounds more like stealing.

I lot of people have given me grief for "defending" Rangel. I don't really think I was defending Rangel, as much as I was opposing what to me seemed like a political witch hunt against him. See these accusations against Vito Lopez, if true, this is clearly stealing. If these allegations prove to have merit, then this is truly a corrupt politician and deserves to go to jail. Politicians have many, many opportunities to take advantage of their positions and steal and this guy obviously took advantage of the system. Rangel had all the opportunities that this guy had however nothing like these blatant abuses were found after an exhaustive investigation.

This Vito Lopez deserves to be in jail, if these things are true.

Rangel? A slap on the wrist.

    Why is anyone surprised?

The real shocker will be when the Post finds an Albany politician that doesn't have a sleazy local non-profit that is used for patronage/slush fund.

Sad, but there is nothing unusual about this story.
