Wild Animals Removed From San Gennaro

lion0910sang.jpg This year's San Gennaro festival was offering up more than just zeppoles... it introduced real wild animals into Little Italy! Capital reports that on Mulberry Street, just south of Houston Street, there's "a set of three cages—one empty, one holding a caged baby lion, and a third with a box containing two tiger cubs" (looks like the empty one held a bear). And we're guessing these little guys have the same opinion on street fairs as Bloomberg. The site notes that "the lion's style was kinda cramped," and it appears that the people already spoke on their behalf, because yesterday the exhibit was being dismantled. Did you see them while they were there?

Wild Animals Removed From San Gennaro....I thought they only show up after 2:00am.

    Good!

These animals are not display items.

There's no value in looking at an animal stuck in a cage.

There was no need for them and I'm glad people spoke up.

This stuff makes me mad. Most baby cubs you see at fairs like this are never adopted or taken care of as adults. They are actually sold illegally to "canned hunts"... a practice in which rich hunters pay a lot of money to shoot and kill a tiger illegally while it is in a CAGE, just for bragging rights and maybe a rug.

Zoos are actually play a big part in contributing to this type of poaching, every time you see a smaller zoo (meaning not the Bronx or San Diego level) advertising "cub day" where you can hold a tiger cub etc... have you noticed these are never integrated into the adult cat population (if the zoo even has one)? It's because "cub day" brings a ton of revenue to failing zoos, but no one wants to foot the huge cost of keeping an adult predatory cat in captivity. So the cubs inevitably disappear after "cub day", only to end up in these 'canned hunts'.

    disgusting.

  • =1. WOW, Cannibal is awesome

So. Instead of sitting in their cages on Mulberry Street, they sit in their cages somewhere else.

  • oh, thank you people for speaking out for the wild animals. it is those fat wannabes wiseguy that should be caged. Fucking peasants.

  • The Great Bandini

That statement says a lot more about you than the group you're attacking.

  • those are words, their actions speak louder about their ignorance and callousness. Bravo to those that spoke against this cruelty. they are worthy beings.

  • The Great Bandini

Technically those are just words too, aren't they?

    The pen is mightier...

    Re: Speaking out against cruelty

  • didn't use a pen but my fingers , words would never hurt me but sticks and stones ........., What they did to those poor wild animals is disgusting and vile

  • Guest

I have plenty of sticks and stones. Where do you want to meet?

  • The Great Bandini

My great grandmother would probably agree w/ you re: sticks and stones but hey, I didn't live through the Great Depression.

I dunno, the Pentagon/Intelligence agencies invest too significant an amount of resources in psychological warfare/propaganda for words to be worthless.

I think in the long run words win out. You can never kill an idea.
