If Con Ed Isn't Rebranding, What's With This Van?

From reader Rishi D.

When reader Rishi D. sent us this photo of a "Con Electric" van on Park Place, we initially thought it was a part of some image overhaul from good ol' Con Ed. But Con Ed spokesman Allan Drury quickly shot that suspicion down, telling us, "That’s not a Con Edison vehicle. We have not undertaken any such rebranding. I have no way of knowing the identity of the people in the photo or the owner of the truck."

The prevailing theory is that the van is being used for some film, and Rishi tells us it "was quite hilarious because there is a regular coned truck right next to it (you can only see the front grill of the regular coned truck in the picture)." And while we spend the rest of the afternoon imagining that hilarious scenario with no photographic evidence, remember to watch out if they start asking you about lowering your bill for Con Ed or National Grid.

Rebranding is a pretty silly guess. The moment I saw the picture, I thought it was either a fake prop truck or some electrical contractor was going to get sued by ConEd. After all, ConEd isn't just electricity. They also provide gas and steam. It wouldn't make any sense for them to call themselves ConEl.

Okay, can you please write it "ConEd" when you refer to Consolidated Edison, and not write "coned"? It's annoying.

    ConEd stand for Consoliated Edison

Con Electric is a new company run by former inmates.

Either way you will get ripped off.

dudes leaning on a van, keys hanging from their belt loops, doing nothing and NOT wearing a ConEd uniform = film crew.

31 flavors of tape - at the ready.

Yep, though until that last point it was all backing up the rebranding story.

It's for a tv show called Blue Bloods. It's being filmed on Park Pl next to the Woolworth Building (where my office is.) They've been setting it up all week. There are a bunch of people walking around with "Crime Scene Unit" jackets on and police officers with tie holders that say "PDNY" on them. All of the store fronts you see there are fake and filling in empty spaces that used to be a Chase bank and a Foot Locker on the corner.

"PDNY"? Law and Order didn't pull that shit.

sigh. I miss new Law and Order.
