great photo! I wish we could keep those lights on all year, I think they would make a great memorial, but was unaware of the bird problem. :(

Too bad you didn't get a photo of the mosque at ground zero which had this banner:

  • Wow... ASCII BS... Where did you cut and paste this? Pamela Geller's website? You hardly have the originality needed to come up with it yourself.

You're still blaming all Muslims for 9/11. Still the bigot we all come to know.

"BEST DAY EVER"?? Nice to know you celebrate the Death of nearly 3,000 people. Who would ever suspect that you celebrate terrorism? You Really Brave Keyboard Kommando, you.

BTW, there the antenna was on one tower, not both.

I live across the street from the Tribute in Light memorial and I can see thousands of disoriented birds flying in circles around the lights right now. Apparently many migratory birds are killed by the lights every year.

  • just saying

Yes, I saw the birds trapped within the lights on the 11pm news. They looked like specks of paper swirling within the Tribute Lights. The newcaster didn't identify what the specks were (and possibly didn't know), but merely praised the "beauty" of the lights.

Right now is the peak of fall migration and there are literally thousands and thousands of birds migrating each night over the city. Because NYC is located on the "Atlantic Flyway," the Tribute Lights have always interfered (in varying degrees) with the fall migration of numerous birds, including many rare and endangered songbirds. Since most of these birds migrate only at night, they are particularly prone to become disoriented by these very large, unnatural lights. The disoriented birds will then fly continuously within the light spectrum until they fall exhausted to the ground. In 2002, the President of the NYC Audubon Society warned about the Tribute Lights: "Our research shows that in certain weather conditions (i.e., moonless nights) there could be numerous bird casualties." In fact, exceptionally large numbers of migrating birds perished the year (2007?) when September 11 occurred on the same day as the phase of the new moon.

I have to question the wisdom of the Tribute Lights when they are the cause of death for even more of God's creatures. And this light display isn't cheap. The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. had to provide $3 million to run the Tribute Lights from 2002 through 2008 which averages out to almost $429,000 each year.
