Lady Gaga's "Gag Order" Over Copycat Claims

Following yesterday's front page accusation that Lady Gaga (formerly Stefani Germanotta) stole the late Lina Morgana's image, style and persona... the Fame Monster is putting gag orders on everyone around her. Perhaps not wanting to add fuel to the Single White Female fire, she even had her own fan message boards shut down when someone posted the story there yesterday.

To recap: Lina and Stefani worked on songs together for Lina's release (which are now often getting attributed to Lady Gaga, since they were never commercially released). Lina then killed herself by jumping off of a building on Staten Island, and shortly after Stefani emerged as Lady Gaga—some claiming that she even adopted Lina's tragic and tough life story, which was probably more marketable than her own upper class, Manhattan-raised, private school-educated upbringing.

The NY Post reports today that Morgana's mother, Yana, says "she was desperately trying to secure the rights to release the dozen or so songs Lina had recorded with Gaga before she committed suicide." While she isn't planning to file a lawsuit, she would like for Gaga to give credit where credit is due. As someone posted on the message board before it went down yesterday, "The problem is Lina Morgana is not getting credit for this song." La la la, Gaga's not hearing it!

but they are both derivative. if you put a ton of production into either stephanie germanotta or lina morgana you get a pop star. sucks the girl never got a shout from her friend when she was alive :(

Ok, I have begrudging respect for Gaga: I agree that there are others that have been bigger style icons and that her look is not necessarily original, but I do credit her with creating an image for herself that stands out among all the other artists working today, and working with the controversy that goes with it.

There is an undeniable correlation between Gaga's style and her late friend, though perhaps this is Gaga's way of keeping her friend's spirit alive, continuing where she left off. This is common in many other art forms, yet in the music industry it seems like it is often considered taboo.

Grace Jones paved the way for both of them a few decades ago.

Gaga signature style is a complete pastiche!

Who would think she is at all "original'?!

Those that think Gaga is original have seen very little and do not know about clowns.

cher...madonna...elton john...cyndi lauper...wigs, hair, crazy fashion....that's right, none of it existed before lady gaga "stole" the dark edginess from lina morgana. I have a picture of myself from when I was younger, laying outside with my hair fanned out in the grass...do I need to burn it? Did I steal that idea from lina? Oh wait no....it's been done for ages...just like most of this stuff has. I'm sorry for her mother, too bad she wasn't this invested in her daughter's life before gaga's fame to see the suicidal signs...maybe she could have gotten her help before she took her life.

Thank you Ruby! Duh! We are all copycats, anything original already happened! Thank you. Cheers to Ruby with the brains!

Stolen from Lina Morgana or not, there's nothing all that original about Lady Gaga's shtick anyway. The only thing that surprises me about her is that she's really boring every time I see her interviewed.

Not only a copycat, but a poor one at that. Lina looks better than Gaga in all of the pictures so far.

Staten keeps on makin' it, Manhattan keeps on takin' it...

  • for a few weeks there Jen I thought maybe your lady gaga phase had passed and you had grown up and discovered...boys?

    but it wasnt to be.

Now you hit us with two stories in a row, polls, mocked up photos...it seems you're still in thick of adolescence.

for OUR own sakes I hope you grow out of it soon.

  • Lina Morgana invented lying on a couch in your bra. She invented it!

  • nicemarmot

I demand a "Lady Gaga will disappear into oblivion soon anyway so who cares" option.

  • valeriob

....seriously Carlson, a Gaga poll? And with only two options? plx fix thx!

  • Guest

    i'd like

"i believe in the lina conspiracy theory."

    and

    "who's lady gaga?"

  • JGNY

Is there a building in Staten Island high enough to do that? I am not being snarky, I am really interested. The only one that I can think of is the Holiday Inn off 278 but I think that's only 6-7 stories.

  • Guest

Anything over 2 stories is potentially lethal.

  • chuzzlewit

    derp. nice poll.

  • Guest

question: did lina leave a suicide note? just curious.

...my mind's going down that conspiracy path, which a commenter suggested yesterday, really fast. :-\
