NYC From Above

spacestationnyc.jpg

NASA astronaut Douglas H. Wheelock is on Twitter... and is sending transmissions from space. His photos from above include one of Hurricane Earl, sending everyone "many prayers from space." He tweeted the above photo on August 28th, saying, “The City That Never Sleeps… New York, New York on a clear summer night." [via MoneyRies]

What an awesome photo!!! And the rest of his photos are just breath-taking!!! What a view! (Could go without all the religious comments though). NOTE: Hover your mouse over the photo on Twitpic and you can rotate the image 180-degrees to get better-oriented (or the view we're used to from maps).

  • nice job

    we are bacteria

I flipped the pic in photoshop for easier viewing, me and my 9 yr old son enjoyed using the top of a pencil to point to all the places in NYC we go to, the major streets and highways we drive on, etc. Really nice.

That's Philly on the right side, AC is on upper right hand corner.

...sending everyone "many prayers from space." ?!?! How did a red state retard get into space? Must be a mistake.

after literally minutes of exhaustive research, including measuring the distance between breezy point and the northern tip of manhattan with my fingers, then seeing how many of those units it take to get from midtown to the big blob, then repeating the same trick on google maps, I have to conclude that that is Philadelphia.

Trenton is the much smaller blob 2/3rds of the way to Philadelphia.

You can also see how the delaware river runs North-South past center city (philadelphia's Midtown), but east-west down near all the sports arenas - but north-east / south-west by North East philadelphia.

    So, in conclusion.

    Totally. Not. Trenton.

Also, the last blob in the opposite direction. That's New Haven.

Other blobs on L.I. Sound are Bridgeport, Stamford and possibly New Rochelle.

    Sorry about that......Philly.

    It`s Trenton.

I find this interesting. Is that rather large glow on the Hudson/UWS from the pier fire the other night? Also, what is the large glow from Battery Park City coming from. If you look very closely, I believe you can spot the red noses of the spirited folks of Breezy Point as well...

One bright light appears to be JFK, my guess on the other is Times Square.

Looks like that mysterious orange puke you'll find on the sidewalks after the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
