Junior Carnival Kicks Off West Indian Parade Festivities

This afternoon, hundreds of kids dressed in colorful costumes started dancing down Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights as part of the Junior Carnival, a precursor to Monday's 43rd Annual West Indian American Day Carnival. Organizers say the Junior Carnival is a way to keep the West Indian traditions alive for the next generation. One parent told NY1, "It's a West Indian thing. It's what we do to celebrate and this is our representation." If you have any photos of the event, email them to photos[at]gothamist[dot]com, or tag them "gothamist" on Flickr.

Since they stopped serving alchohol a number of years ago, violence has diminished significantly. Go early, eat amazing food, then get out before it gets too crowded. It's an beautiful parade you should see at least once.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE MASS PLAYERS!!!!

The costumes are very heavy and it takes a special kind of endurance to make it through the whole parade. Continue the tradition of your great heritage !!!!

You are a true idiot. I actually feel sorry for you.

Is the violence that always comes with j'ouvert and the parade part of tradition too?
