Video: Fight Breaks Out At The U.S. Open

Who knew tennis matches could be so riddled with crime! While it hasn't gotten all Match Point over in Queens (yet), there has been some unsavory behavior at the U.S. Open, and it's only the first week. First up, this guy was caught trying to scalp 339 tickets on Tuesday—but then the real action happened last night, when we saw the first upper deck brawl—it was all caught on video, of course:

According to the NY Post, the fight happened during the Novak Djokovic (Serbia) and Philipp Petzschner (Germany) match, around 9 p.m., when a female fan asked a man in his 20s to refrain from using the F word so much. Words were exchanged, there was allegedly a slap match between the two, and then an older gent stepped in and ended up falling down the stairs.

The U.S. Open may want to beef up their security! Needless to say, the match stopped due to the distraction, and a U.S. Tennis Association spokesman addressed the issue, saying: “It’s a hot night in New York. Things happen." Maybe we'll get to see a Richie Tenenbaum at Windswept Fields-type breakdown sometime before the Open closes on the 12th.

Pedro Martinez versus Don Zimmer flashbacks here-Zimmer was hailed as a warrior, a stand up guy-sticking up for his team, he could do no wrong in New Yorker's eyes. Here an old guy wants to teach the foul mouthed ruffian a lesson and it is called "assault".

  • whitecastlerock

I stand corrected-that NY Post video clearly shows her slapping him first-I have no idea what provoked the insanity, but she should have called security and not taken matters into her own hands.

  • BC70

They had no right to touch the guy - it's assault plain and simple.

  • Guest

it's all fun and games until someone says, "assault."

  • AYCE

A thousand pardons for promoting the NY Pest errr Post, but the video on their site is much better...you get to hear the pimp-smack the lady gives him:

The First Amendment does not protect your right to curse in front of my mom and then to curse AT her...you might think that is how it works but I assure you it does not.

try reading the Bill of Rights sometimes...save us all some time correcting you.

  • Huffy6241

The first amendment does clearly state "when some dumbass is saying something you find offensive, but what they have every every right to express, it's also your right to get up in that person's face and assault them - cuz, you know, what he was saying hurt your mommies wittle feewings."

  • iamdraize

that video deserves re-watching, the reactions from the people in the crowd are great.

on a 2nd viewing, with no volumne, the young guy seems less of the instigator.

the old man does try some sort of head grab which gets them both thrown down....the old man is still coming to from that when the video is over...then the woman does swing and the guy, and instead of swinging back he just kind of pushes with his body...

    I wonder what really happened.

    Ok thank you

  • Kelles

    This is totally wrong

-the old guy shuffles awkwardly forward telegraphing his move

-there is no shoulder rotation on the initial shot

-the eastern stance favored by older US players didn't allow old guy to shift for an unexpectedly rising target (the younger guy's head)

-his weight is on his back foot for his two-handed backhand

    - no hip/shoulder rotation

    - and finally, never underestimate the importance of a follow-thru

    P.S. @1:43 nice seat jumping

this is what happens when you don't play God Bless America between player changes.

  • JenChungsBaby

So this is another sign that the terrorists have already won?

  • Spirit of 76

Too bad Roger Federer wasn't there. He could have ended the fight with a well-placed tennis ball to somebody's head. Unless that famous "William Tell" video was a fake.

  • CR

The kid may be in the right, but I certainly hope his dad gives him a hard smack in the back of the head. Crazy lady or not, you don't escalate bad situations.

  • Huffy6241

So the young man should know better than to escalate a situation - but a grown man and woman, who probably confronted this kid first, they don't have to?

  • Sketto

Watch the video without sound and that kid looks like he's doing every shrug, eyeroll, and grimace he's ever seen on the Sopranos. It all just kinda makes him look like a douchebag. Technically, I think he's legally permitted to be one in public, though.

  • robingee

    Reminds me of Turtle.

  • Tower18

The guy may have been so upset because the woman has already hit him. Listen to the video at :38 in, the background conversation goes:

Guy 1: She has no right to hit him, that's ridiculous.

Guy 2: Ohhh, get security over there

Guy 3: But she can get away with it, though, see? They oughta haul her out of there.

And this all happens before any of the physical contact we see in the video.

So it appears that the guy may have been acting like a douchebag AFTER he was already slapped by the woman. If that's true, it looks like he's actually showing restraint.

  • Guest

Sad that everybody on this site supports the First Amendment when it works for their cause, but when some guy says "Fuck" a few times, he's a douchebag. Sad.

  • Kelles

poor old guy! what came over him? there was no way he wasn't going down. Maybe in his day, people didn't flail their arms about yelling "go ahead hit me," ready to sue? I think from all the pointing done by the nearby seats, the younger guy was being a d-bag. I hope someone sees the video and identifies him and he gets what he deserves but instead he'll probably be a 'hero' among his douchey friends.

  • Guest

Amazing Jackie Chan Play-by-Play commentating. If they ever get the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight signed, they should definitely consider getting this guy to call it.

  • iamdraize

from 1K miles away the kid looks like a POS. I'd never convict the old man if I was on a jury...

  • Potty Boy

In the beginning, the other people in the crowd don't seem all that interested in their argument. I would have been glued to it, like "Damn! What'd he say to her?!"

  • grandzu

Man, did the dbag do enough hand gestures when he was arguing?

  • John L

So "Respecting your elders" is just a cliche now?

There was no need for this young punk's attitude towards this couple. How can anyone condone that? His animated, eyes bulging, finger pointing, and God only knows what was coming out of his mouth was totally uncalled for. He was obviously doing that because they were an older couple and didn't feel any threat. I wonder if he's so bold when its people his own age. I've had occasions were I thought older people were being unreasonable but due to the values instilled in me I just walked away or shut my mouth.

This older man handled this like a gentleman, didn't talk to much but didn't allow himself or family to be disrespected by this Jersey Shore wannabe. I don't condone physical violence but realize that sometimes people need to be slapped and this was definitely one of those times. Its just too bad that this older man couldn't get a better hold of him and give him the beating he deserved. From what I see they tried to be diplomatic and talk it out but there was no talking to this punk and his friend stayed out of it because he knew his buddy was wrong. I'll be damned the day I get to that age and some young punk starts insulting me and my family I have to just sit there and take it.

When I look at older men like this I envision an American who paved the way for us, possibly a veteran who fought in wars for us to enjoy the freedoms we have. At the very minimum I see a man who just because of his age deserves the utmost respect.

  • justthinkin

There is a time to live, a time to die and a time to call securtity and let them handle it.....the couple was older and should have been wiser.

  • lexicondevil

seriously - if it wasn't already obvious, the fact that the friend discreetly bolted out of there is a pretty good sign that the young guy was in the wrong. I'm betting those "white knights" at the end heard the whole thing and had also had enough with whatever crap the punk was spewing.

But what we really need is a lip reader on this.

  • robingee

Regardless of what the young guy was yelling at the lady and man, the young guy got attacked physically first...after he had already sat down. Regardless of if the young kid is a douchebag and was spouting off at the mouth, that doesn't give the old guy a right to go and attack him.

Sorry, but I'm siding with the mouthy douchebag on this one.

yes, he should have gotten seriously beat up, kicked him until he bled. still doesn't mean someone has to do it.

I just yelled in my office - great fight, that dbag looked like he deserved it (moreso after he took a swing at the woman). Just hope the older guy is ok.

  • Petey

He only swung after he was hit twice, first by the older guy, who then fell, then by the woman. She wants to throw a hit at someone, expect to get hit back.

  • Jen S

Hey, he could've easily backed off.

  • robingee

I think he showed great physical restraint, if not verbal. That lady smacked him across the face and he did nothing. He sat down and the father came at him and put his hands around his throat. Sure the kid's a dick, but you can't strangle him.

  • Petey

He went to sit down, and they continued to come at him. Those were his seats. Where is he supposed to back down to? He has no right to defend himself when he's attacked physically?

  • jules1000

old man/daughter should have just alerted US Open ushers who would have escorted the young guy out, or made him be more quiet, but no, dad/daughter just had to play tough and felt the need to state their point physically.

    sad.

and this embarrassment will be available on the internet forever.

  • jules1000

wasn't meant as a response.... sigh....

  • jules1000

    completely agree.

So what if he's a douche and used inappropriate language!

He was physically attacked by two people (and then also by other people from above).

If I attacked every obnoxious douche who uses foul language I would be very busy.

Hitting and choking is never ok, even if it's a woman or an old man who does the hitting.

  • hotstepper

that's right. no real lady acts like that. she can't blame the world for her tremendous FUPA.

  • CR

I'm guessing the kid deserved it. Do kids no longer have any respect for women? The attitude he's throwing around (the bulging eyeballs, the chest-spreading, the exaggerated gesticulating, etc) in front of woman is unforgivable. And he's screaming and yelling at her. I'm guessing he hates his mom.

  • robingee

Yeah, the guy's probably a loudmouth dick, but she hit him first. You can even see in the still photo, she is lunging at him and his hands are up in a submissive, defensive posture. Then after everyone goes back to their seats her father gets up and tries to strangle the dude. The city is full of loudmouth dicks, but it's against the law to strangle all of them.

  • JenChungsBaby

I don't see any woman in that video.

  • Mr. Shankly

Correction, you don't see a 'lady' in that video.

Who gets to be that age in this city not learning to avoid provoking psychos. She was itching to start that fight. I expect that behavior from a teenage girl, not an old broad like that.

  • Potty Boy

    Good narration and video.

  • JacqueMehoff

I'm hearing much more women cursing since the advent of the cell phone.

  • Potty Boy

I think the kid was a punk. And I also think younger kids nowadays also have much less respect than prior generations. But I disagree on the blanket "respect for women" point. I've seen plenty of women act (speak or yell) in a pretty disgusting manner when they get heated. To the point where they lack any semblance of class or civility. When they act that way, I don't believe they belong in a protected class.

  • CR

Sadly you're probably right about women spouting off too.

Both the older man and woman resorted to violence and will pay dearly in court. It's all on video. Case closed. I enjoyed watching that old dude fall on those chairs, maybe the chronic back pain he'll suffer from will remind him not to act this way.

  • Kojak

They did act first, but we weren't there so we don't know exactly what the younger guy said to her. The older man looked like he tried to defend the honor of his wife/daughter.

Who knows what you would've done in the same situation.

  • Petey

I'm not saying they weren't provoked, BUT the older guy, and the woman both attacked him, not the other way around.

  • JenChungsBaby

What about the other guys who seem to jump in after the old guy goes down? The kid gets jumped by a bunch of geezers who were inspired by the old guy when if fact it was the old guy who started it.

  • Petey

They were even moreso wrong than the initial 2, BUT they seemed to be holding people back, rather than hitting anyone.

  • MidC Frank

Did you even watch the video? The old guy was thrown down over the seats -- not the steps.

  • Hischick08

He wasn't thrown. They lost their balance and fell, Did YOU watch video?

"Djokovic quipped that during the fight, “I hoped there was no Serbian up there.”

Smart money's on the punk being Serb.

I was at the Open two years ago and the Serb fans were the worst! Screaming and yelling and waving their butcher's apron of a flag (flag waving now banned).

Tennis used to be civilized, and then the Serbs started playing.

  • em

Actually, the guy looks like your typical smug Jersey douchebag who can't keep his mouth shut long enough to watch a tennis match.

A couple years ago at the Roddick/Djokovic match some douche wearing an Izod visor (says it all) kept yelling silly right wing pro-America shit to Djokovic. My husband (who is normally very passive) got so pissed that he told the guy to shut up. The guy started threatening my husband until everyone else in the stands told the guy to shut up.

Thankfully him and his drunk girlfriend were escorted out.

What is it about Djokovic at the Open that gets people all keyed up?!
