Owner Of Precious Dodge Charger Now Feels Bad

2010_08_whine.jpg You don't know shame until the Post mocks you the day after the Post prints its interview with you. That's the lesson Maria McCormack, who complained to the paper about her "baby"—a red Dodge Charger—being damaged by an apparently suicidal man (she said, "I want to meet [jumper Tom Magill] and say, 'Why? Why my car out of all the cars in the city?'"). According to the Post, now McCormack says, "I have not slept since this has happened. My heart and prayers go out to the family. I've been praying for Tom. I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery."

Magill, 22, is believed to have jumped from the 39th floor of 75 West End Avenue near 63rd Street on Tuesday morning. McCormack's husband Guy had borrowed the car that day and parked it in a dead end—and the vehicle apparently somewhat cushioned Magill's huge fall (he could have been going more than 100 mph). The young man, a Fordham graduate who had once lived in the building, was described as looking like a "pretzel" after crashing through the car's back windshield; he has undergone many surgeries and face a long recovery, if he is able to survive other complications.

McCormack had told the Post in Thursday's interview, "I wonder how he feels now that he made it. Does he feel like an idiot? I hope he's OK. But I just want to know why," which infuriated Magill's friends. One said, "The damage to the car -- it saved his life, and that's what you should care about, not your car!" while another offered, "I think it's unfortunate that someone would value a material object over someone's life."

  • She has car insurance... or does she?

Here's the most important lesson to be drawn from this story: if you're ever even peripherally involved in a newsmaking situation, don't talk to the press -- especially attention-seeking tabloids.

Everyone has the inclination to want their say, but unless you really know what you're doing you're asking for trouble. No matter what else she may have said in that interview, she gave them the opportunity to spin it into a sensationalistic story and it was inevitable that if they had that opportunity they'd take it.

  • JacqueMehoff

not to mention being open to the NY Post comment section.

my fave was, looks like she loves food more than her car.

  • kazubes

Smart of her to apologize and just end the scrutiny before it starts, that being said I agree with her original sentiments entirely

  • just saying

"Meanwhile, a Dodge spokesman credited the car's 'high-strength steel structure' for helping absorb the blow. 'We are glad that Mr. Magill survived the 40-story free-fall and that our Dodge Charger was able to cushion his landing,' said company spokesman Jiyan Cadiz."

Maybe Dodge can work this into a future commercial. lol

  • dirty hipster

WTF is it with people killing themselves by jumping off of tall buildings lately?

What ever happened to the good ol fashioned bottle of vicodin and bottle of wine combo?

  • isla

    Emo is out?

  • PTG in nyc

Suicide is obviously a desperate option, but I'd imagine that at the least this guy did not have hope for his future. Now he'll have $1 million in medical bills and what I'm sure is to be a lifetime of pain and other expenses.

He made his life 10x worse, and I don't blame the person whose car got wrecked for complaining. Even if her insurance company is cooperating, there's paperwork, police reports, haggling, going out of her way to get a loaner, etc... that just shit on her Labor Day weekend. I couldn't name a single person that wouldn't feel inconvenienced by this whole affair.

  • Xwendekar

Apparently the insurance company advised them to sue the boy for damages, which probably means that their insurance doesn't cover random acts of selfishness.

  • verbal

I hope he recovers, and then has to pay restitution to her. Suicide is a terrible thing that affects everyone but the selfish people that commit the act.

  • mocanlagunas

    I'm with her. 100%.

Is he getting her a new car? Paying her for a rental in the meantime? F**k him...

  • PKinNYC

I also heard this guy wants to build a mosque near ground zero too...what a cad

  • manuelmontalvo

jumper should sue the car owner (geico $) for this accident resulting in his horrific injuries.

  • Mrs Parker

He didn't value his own life or the life of anyone he might have taken with him. Why should a stranger value his life? Do you think the inurance fairy just flits around giving out brand new cars? Fuck him, I'm with her.

  • O C'mon...

Even in these circumstances, Anyone would be P/O'ed that their car was wrecked.

  • Kelles

Ms McCormack is supposed to feel sorry for the guy that landed on her car? Rather than feel a little angry? The jumper could have landed on her husband. Did the jumper's friends think about that?

I digress but if she fixes that car she should totally add a nice vanity plate

i don't even like this joke. eh, i'll click submit anyway.

  • Guest

a-ha! i've figured it out. the joke was missing a punchline:

    *nobody doesn't read these comments.

slightly better, even if i've completely murdered an attempted joke in the process. ok, back to my cave.

  • ItchyGoiter

It's pissing me off that everyone is saying that the car saved his life. The car ruined his death, which is what he wanted. I think if I were the jumper, I would be pissed at myself (and yes, feel like an idiot) and not be surprised if people were pissed at me. The car owner is right to be annoyed (she didn't wish death upon him or anything).

Who is going to pay this guy's medical bills?

  • JacqueMehoff

when I first moved into my apt. there was a jumper. he landed on a wrought iron fence in the back, split him in half. it all depends on what breaks your fall. Fence? not so good.

  • ForrestWhitaker

I'm sorry, after reading that douchebags facebook page, he's getting no sympathy from me.

  • Madly Hatting

For real. He has about 80 more facebook friends than me....I know what I'm doing this weekend. Keep your cars in garages!!

  • JacqueMehoff

now I know what to do to piss some people off.

I was in an intense depression/suicide study last month, so watch out below! and, I have no family or any property/assets. seeya!

  • isla

I think you are better off just exhibiting all irritating train behaviors all the time if you really want to piss people off.

Plus we need you around to post! It would not be the same without you. (I don't drive so it's not about the car, promise!)

  • Guest

hey man, all i do nowadays is work besides yoga and meditation for spiritual healing purposes. can't really emotionally hang out with anyone at the moment. why do you think i'm frequently here? and one might think that i live the most depressing life...

...except i'm really not, at all.

Ummmm...does anyone remember the Seinfeld episode where a similar thing happened to George's car...

  • Eric

Tom could have landed on you Maria, or your child, or on your dog, or you could have been scarred for life seeing him explode in front of you. Tom is a selfish prick who owes you an apology, Maria. The Post is a fucking shitty tabloid.

  • Tower18
while another offered, "I think it's unfortunate that someone would value a material object over someone's life."

I think it's unfortunate how little the guy valued his own life, to jump off a building, potentially harming the lives of countless people in the process.

Considering how little he valued his life, why should she? If it was me, I'd be like "He survived? Damn. Okay, good. Now, who pays for my car?"

  • militza

ok, this guy does sound kinda like a dweeb but he must have been in an extreme amount of pain to take such action. guessing that when you do something like that your mind isn't exactly clear and heaven forbid you inconvenience someone for just a bit.

  • Hischick08

    Dweeb?

  • Kelles

yeah calling him a "dweeb" is being kind

  • Eric

Tell me, how long would you be "inconvenienced" if he landed on you? For just a bit?

  • militza

relax Eric Gordon. I would obviously be inconvenienced much if he landed on me cause that would hurt. ouch.

  • ADB

I have some sympathy for the car owner. That sorry bastard would have to come up with some cash to fix my goddamned car as soon as he can sign the insurance forms. If he killed himself on my car, you can bet that I'd hand court papers to his grieving parents. Yep.

Has she complained about the bloodstains? I'd complain about the bloodstains. They're a bitch to get out, and if not treated properly, you can get a nasty rotten smell from the upholstery in the summer time.

  • JenChungsBaby

I have some sympathy for her too, but she is a little bit of a drama queen.

  • Angelheaded Hipster

the self-absorbed pansy actor could have killed people. instead he landed on her car. she, not being the dalai lama, expressed annoyance about it. the post sucks. john L types too much. A. rod sucks.

  • Madly Hatting

    Leave A-Rod out of this!

  • John L

    Thanks for the honorable mention.

  • Potty Boy

    hahahahhaha. +1 to everything.

Especially that johnL types too much.

  • Sketto

Yes, this is our culture when someone who SAID something is asked to apologize to someone who actually DID something wrong. I'm with her. That idiot jumper should apologize to her and everyone else in the city. He certainly didn't care about who he would've landed on and fucking killed. What if she'd been IN her car? Screw the jumper.

  • Xwendekar

A suicide attempt is the ULTIMATE act of self-absorption. No, I'm sure this kid didn't at all take into account the affect his death would have on friends, family, the car he might land on, or the hapless pedestrian he might have crushed in falling had his trajectory not been quite right.

In short, I don't think it's sooo far-fetched that someone affected by something like this (in whatever fashion) might feel a bit miffed.

And I'm pretty well sick of hearing the Post's two cents on everything anyway.

  • robingee

People who commit suicide are full of sadness and despair. To say they are selfish is just wrong. They are trying to DIE. How can anyone be mad at them for being so beyond trying and beyond wanting help that they want to die? THAT is selfish, in my view.

  • Xwendekar

    robingee

I don't know if you're speaking from experience on the subject, but I am, from all sides of the equation.

The impulse for suicide comes from deep seated (often chemically-based) depression, but in many cases it also comes from a (sometimes) unconscious desire to punish those around you. They wish to punish those who, in their mind, have somehow failed them, even though it was they who failed to reach out to the people who care about them.

The spiral is often perpetuated by chemical influences or general feelings of worthlessness, but can be broken if the person stops for a moment to consider reaching out. But too often, they don't even consider the possibility. Consequently, most people whose friends and loved ones have committed suicide have NO idea they are even depressed, and end up (wrongly) blaming themselves for not intervening.

I'm not talking here about people who have chronic ailments and make well-considered decisions (usually involving discussions with loved ones), but I don't think that's the case here.

  • overthinkingit

"Chemically-based" depression? Is it not possible that his life just sucked, or perhaps he was tired of being another cog in Manhattan, or maybe he just wasn't evolutionary-fit to meet a woman in NYC (read: couldn't succumb to being a lying douche bag). Faulting a chemical imbalance as the cause of severe depression is unfair and serves as a scapegoat to our actual reality. It's a defense mechanism being perpetuated so that we won't admit to ourselves that life kinda just sucks.

Also, suicide is NOT selfish. Why do people always assume that others around are "going to be hurt"? What if "others" played a role in the suicide? Why should a suicidal person, or any person really, care what others think? The only "hurting" that's cause to others is the abrupt reminder that they too will die. People don't like to be reminded of that, and for that selfish interest alone, they, as you say it, blame themselves for not intervening.

But no worries, after 2 months, they'll forget.

  • JacqueMehoff

the suicide is selfish line I sorta equate with the mourning "don't forget to take time for Yourself" line. why is it on the net a guy posts about a loved one dying someone always posts, "don't forget to take some time out for yourself..." that's selfish.

hey, my dad died, damn man, that's sad but don't forget to take some time out for yourself.

  • Rocknrope

Wow, sounds like you've solved the case on clinical depression and suicide. Have you been in touch with the AMA?

  • JacqueMehoff

I was in an intense as shit study, we don't know what makes one go from thoughts to actually doing the act. we know the 5 points that can make a person commit suicide. (tipping point, hopelessness, Press/stress, self-hate and another one I forgot)

if it is a chemical imbalance why is it that the anti-depressive meds CAN make some commit suicide? that's what the med does, corrects an imbalance.

  • iamdraize

I thought the same thing when I saw that story yesterday.

man miraculously survives 30 story suicide attempt and she says...

'Why my car out of all the cars in the city?'

    groan.

    this is OUR culture.

  • longacre

No it's not...there are dipshits in every culture.

    Right? What an embarrassment.
