Post Wants Obama To Earn His Nobel Peace Prize

2010_08_peaceprize.jpg Yesterday, President Obama met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and asked them to seize "this moment of opportunity" and embark on peace talks. He said afterwards, "The hard work is only beginning. Neither success nor failure is inevitable. But this much we know: If we do not make the attempt, then failure is guaranteed." Netanyahu called Abbas his "partner in peace" while Abbas noted he'd work in spite "the difficulties we’re going to face tomorrow." Obama also said, "We are under no illusions. Passions run deep. Each side has legitimate and enduring interests. Years of mistrust will not disappear overnight."

According to the NY TImes, "The talks are to be held at the State Department, where they will take place under the eye of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The negotiations follow a remarkable tableau at the White House on Wednesday night, where President Obama...vowed to do everything within his power in the next year to achieve the comprehensive agreement that has eluded negotiators since Israel was established."

Israel is concerned about its security—Netanyahu said, "We left Lebanon, we got terror. We left Gaza, we got terror. We want to ensure that territory we concede will not be turned into a third Iranian-sponsored terror enclave aimed at the heart of Israel."— while Palestine is worried about the soon-to-expire Israeli moratorium on West Bank construction.

How did he win the noble price that also in the first place? What does that mean that he was born half American?

  • iamdraize

I just noticed this from another site...

note in the peace between Israelis AND the Palestenians who gets quoted...just the one side. Just Netanyahu. Which is ALWAYS the case. You never are rarely allowed to hear from the palestenians. they are invisible in the US media. Why?

Abbas was there. He had a speech, but its content was IGNORED. Gothamist does it too, but eh I know you guys are still learning...

    here is what abbas said

“It is time to make peace, it is time to end the occupation that began in 1967, and for the Palestinian people to achieve their freedom, independence and justice, it is time for the establishment of sovereign, independent Palestinian state side by side the state of Israel, it is time to end the conflict in the middle east region permanently....."

“We also reiterate our commitment to carry out all our obligations, and we call on Israel to do the same, including freezing all settlement activity and lifting all restrictions on movement and access, which notably includes the siege on Gaza,”

When Obama received his Noble Prize, America as a whole received it for electing him. But while Obama has proven to be worthy of the Noble Prize, it's the American people who have proven not to be worthy of such a distinction.

Obama is a great man and great leader and the world recognizes and respects that. I'm sure if he ran for world leader, if there was such a thing, he'd win decisively.

But here in America we fall for the propaganda. The Koch Brothers invent lies back it up with their own think tanks and Rupert Murdoch and the rest of the media disseminates it for mass consumption and most Americans eat it up. If they decided to say that Obama is an alien cyborg from another galaxy and ran it through all their media outlets I guarantee that by next week there would be a poll with the majority of Americans claiming that Obama is indeed an alien cyborg. It's pathetic and dangerous that Americans have become so susceptible and easy to manipulate and indoctrinate with propaganda.

I beg and plead that every American please read this piece from the New Yorker.

    PLEASE!

I think every American needs to read this article so they can truly understand how they are using propaganda techniques to sway public opinion.

If Obama was a baseball player he'd be 3 for 3 right now with all three hits being homeruns.

First Homerun: Universal Healthcare, they said it couldn't be done, so many past presidents have tried but Obama did it.

Second Homerun: Wall Street Reform, the largest consumer protection bill since the recession. It was a tough battle but Obama did it again!

Third Homerun: The Troops are coming home, end of major operations in Iraq. As promised Obama delivered, on schedule. Obama did it again!

And it's still only the middle of the game, no even the seventh inning stretch.

Obama says his next focus will be the economy, let's see if he can fix Bush's mess. I have faith because you have to admit he's done everything he's set out to do thus far.

Obama has done an incredible job under the absolute worst circumstances this country has ever been in but we as Americans have failed.

"but we as Americans have failed" Please try to speak for yourself, I am an American, no apology necessary.

What a lost cause. Cut these wing-nuts loose.

Cold fusion in a bathtub is more likely than peace there.

the ny post is about as appealing as andrea peysers vagina..

  • handsomedevil

Not true. If you were to name the one publication that has been most committed to promoting peace, it would be the Post. It's the paper for people who believe in the intrinsic goodness of mankind.

  • Angelheaded Hipster

i forgot he won a nobel peace prize

    now THATS comedy

  • Tricksta

Well played, Jen! You post a story that has nothing to do with NYC specifically but is sure to generate lots of page hits from every ultra-right and ultra-left wingnut... and you tie it in to NYC with a reference to the NY Post! And the NY Times!

    Pretty slick!

Looking forward to lots of comments on how Hitler was right, Arabs/Muslims are all terrorists, Israel is the single threat to world peace, the land was promised to the Jews in the Bible, the U.S. gives all its money in foreign aid to Israel alone, etc., etc.

There. I saved a lot of commenters some typing.

When you already have something, you don't need to "earn" it.

  • Petey

He certainly didn't do anything to deserve a peace prize when it was given.
