If Bloomberg Doesn't Finish Third Term, It's 'Cause He Died

2010_08_bloomarms.jpg Because there's rampant speculation (or at least a dearth of pre-Labor Day stories) that he's being wooed for a possible White House job, Mayor Bloomberg was extra-emphatic that he'll finish out his controversial third term at NYC mayor. The Post's David Seifman asked him, "Are there any circumstances under which you would not serve out the full third term?" to which Bloomberg responded with tantalizing "Yes," adding, "If I died."

Seifman then asked, "Are there any other?" so Bloomberg said, "I suppose total incapacitation would also [be a reason]. Short of that I can't think of any. Thank you very much." The Wall Street Journal reminds us, "Under the City Charter, if there's a vacancy in the mayor's office, the public advocate would temporarily assume the mayor's duties. A nonpartisan special election would be held roughly 60 days after a mayoral vacancy occurs. If no candidate received 40% of the vote in the special election, the two candidates with the most votes would advance to a run-off two weeks later. Depending on when the vacancy occurs in the term, a second election to fill the remainder of the unexpired term would be held at the time of the next general election."

There must be some mistake. Are you referring to former Mayor Bloomberg, who must have left office after 2 terms because he said changing term limits would be a "disgrace"?

  • etypical

from his lizardy little lips to god's ears.

  • JacqueMehoff

hey, he said it, not me.

  • verbal

    ditto!

I would hate to wish death on anybody but damn it Bloomberg stop tempting me!

  • Dogsbody

I think the most likely reason for him not to finish his third term would be if he just changed the rules so that his third term runs indefinitely.

  • Spirit of 76

I bet the recently silent felixthecat had an orgasm when he read that headline.

  • Hey, remember that time Sarah Palin quit being the Governor? I still wonder about that-- was it to make money touring, or avoid further scrutiny of her professional ethics? See, I guess it isn't just "Stupid or Evil." It is "Stupid, Evil, or Greedy?"

  • JayNYC

Well then, I certainly hope he doesn't finish out his third term.

  • exnyer

NYC finances are already on life support, thanks to ten years of Bloony.

  • MT

And how exactly do you think New York would be better off if an incompetent like Bill Thompson had won in 2009? People need to wise up and count their lucky stars that we have a good manager like Bloomberg in charge in this mess. Take a look at Las Vegas or Los Angeles or pretty much any other city in America right now. There but for the grace of Bloomberg goes us . . .

  • exnyer

Sorry, my bad math, Bloomy has another 3years 4 months to fix the finances the $1.00 per year salary ain`t going to do it. Gotta somehow come up with that 4,000,000,000.00 to close the gap this year and next year and the year after that...you get the pic.

There's another more likely option; indictment.

How does a man triple his net worth while in office, all while his portfolio is supposed to be in a blind trust - when every other private investor on the planet has lost half their worth?

There will be troves of information on the depths of his corruption in office and how he and his cronies made out while the middle class in NYC died.

His support of the mosque is just the latest ruse so he can shore up his support for his overseas interests, while he works on his 'legacy' here.

A good friend of mine has the right idea for all our political leaders - firing squads!

It's hilarious to me how consistently retarded people on this website are. WHAT ktinnyc SAID MORON.

Pretty easily actually. The valuation of the company was increased when Merrill sold it's 20% of it's stake in Bloomberg LLP for greater than anticipated.

Isn't it absurd that people STILL don't understand this? He tripled his PERCEIVED wealth people! Nobody actually knew what Bloomberg was worth to begin with!

    Hah...oh well.

    "Yes,...If I died."

funny, ironically a few gothamist commenters have been encouraging him to do this for awhile now -- a mutual understanding?
