Do New York Airports Need Slides?

Sure, JetBlue's T5 at JFK Airport is nice, but it's also lacking in in-house entertainment (aside from the occasional concert or random emergency slide exit). Just take a look at what they've got going on at Singapore’s Changi Airport: a 40-foot-slide! Endless opportunity for fun, right at the airport... or as Americans might see it, endless opportunity for lawsuits.

We've contacted the Port Authority to see if they'd ever consider such a thing at one of NYC's major airports, and will update when they find time in their busy schedule to answer a question about an amusement ride. In the meantime, the Singapore folk tell us "riders can expect to experience a top speed of 19 feet/second while going down the slide," and with every $22USD spent at the airport, they can redeem tokens for two rides. Check out some video below:

Looks cool, but it will never happen here.

Inevitable lawsuits screw us all once again.

These are fun, was in London when the Tate Modern exhibited two. You really do get some speed going. I say no to JFK but yes to a venue that can run them safely. Children have a blast on the smaller one.

Wow Gothamist missed an opportunity to attach a photo of Kramer sliding out of the baggage carousel at Laguardia, disappointing.

  • Cannibal

    No farting zone

    - EWWWWW! What happened?

    - Dude had too may Singapore Slings before he went on the Singapore Slide...

If they had installed this at JFK, maybe Steven Slater could have saved JetBlue a lot of money instead of deploying an inflatable one. Come to think of it, it'd be a great way to get rid of stress after having been stuck in a holding pattern for the last few hours.

  • Dogsbody

Fat people would get stuck on the first bend.

  • nicemarmot

If you tried to put that in a New York airport, someone would try to smash it, or vomit in it, or smear feces all over it. Or possibly just use it as a garbage disposal.

Not that I think we're that bad, but Singapore does maintain quality of life laws that make Giuliani's reign seem lax by comparison. (Not to mention making regular use of the death penalty and caning for more serious crimes.)

  • JacqueMehoff

yeah, bring that and the singapore cane.

If these slides were in NY airports, there would be so many lawyers clustered around the bottom waiting to file lawsuits that you wouldnt even be able to come out of the end of it.

  • Think2wice

Agreed, in this tort-tastic country we need instant waiver signatures. EZ-Waiver. Just swipe.

  • Can Gothamist as a community finally come together & say YES. Yes, slides.

  • Madly Hatting

No. Instead of building slides to distract us from how awful air transportation is, perhaps this money could go to getting rid of my 9/11 fee. I never thought I'd be "charged" with a terrorist attack. Don't mind my double entendre.

  • ChampionOfTheSun

That's pretty cool. I can't imagine a NYC will ever have that though. Our airports are just horrible, and make me hate travelling. Every time I do travel though, I'm surpised at how much nicer other airports are.

  • Cannibal

If they put a slide in JFK it would somehow get soiled and sticky, have people sleeping inside it at night, at the bottom would be a pile of fast garbage and sunflower seed shells, and perverts waiting with camera phones. And can you imagine the SMELL

  • ChampionOfTheSun

    Greatest city in the world

  • Guest

while everyone else is culturally and technologically advancing and evolving, new york will still be stuck in this timeless ~1998-ish period.

  • Cannibal

*fast food garbage, though the garbage might be fast too once the rats find it

  • Cannibal

    Yes. We do need slides.
