Century 21 Will Take Over Barnes & Noble's Lincoln Square Space

The hunch about Barnes and Noble's Lincoln Square location at West 66th Street and Broadway succumbing to the neighborhood's "fashion corridor" status was right: Discount retailer Century 21 confirmed the rumor that it will take over the 60,000 square foot space.

According to Crain's NY, Century 21's uptown store (it's other Manhattan location is across from the World Trade Center site) would open in the fall of next year. Barnes & Noble said that rents were too high for it to stay and it would close its door in January 2011 The building's owner, Millennium Partners, said, "We have been searching for a tenant who has the ability to drive a large volume of shoppers to the area. We believe that having Century 21 as an anchor in Lincoln Square will help drive a level of pedestrian traffic that our other retail tenants will benefit from." It'll be interesting to see if Century 21 will be as "community-minded" as Barnes and Noble as been.

There are a number of clothing retailers, both boutique and chain, in the neighborhood: There's Banana Republic next door, Gap a block away, Zara across the street, Burberry Brit around the corner—not to mention Lucky Brand, Reiss, Theory, Wink, Olive & Bette's and more. Plus, there are big discount retailers: Seven blocks north, there's a Loehmann's in the Ansonia Building (between 73rd an 74th Streets), and at Broadway and West 79th Street, there's a Filene's Basement.

Will it be such a problem if Century 21 takes over the building? Personally I don't think so. There's already so many boutiques and chains, I can't see how things will change.

Why are they trying to make the upper west side more downtown orientated its more of a residential area.I mean this is way better then having a tj max on 99 and columbus ave were its bound to fail.

  • Tower18

Interestingly, everyone is mourning the death of a global chain, while ruing the addition of a locally-owned business.

  • jibbly

To be fair B&N is a native NYC global conglomerate. But point taken.

I always thought that the (awful) movie "You've Got Mail" was loosely inspired by this particular B&N. The timing is right (B&N opened there in 1995, movie released 1999), and they even set it in the UWS. If Meg Ryan's character didn't eventually go to work for "Fox Books" she would totally be like,"So who's laughing now Joe Fox?!1!!1eleven! F-O-X this, motherfucker!"

I live on the UWS and while I have no problem with "breeders", who are some of the nicest people around here, I do lament the decline of the Upper West Side as a place for writers and readers. The former have been emptying out for years now, replaced by finance types. Few people up here are going to be happy that this Barnes and Noble store has been replaced with yet another shmatararium for the consumption of cheaply manufactured foreign made goods.

Century 21 tends to carry some really nice product - especially the downtown location.

As romantic as it is for people to fall in love with a giant bookstore located off Lincoln Center, obviously the operation of that location doesn't financially make sense anymore, so it is what it is. Not really much to argue about here.

  • wow 14th street

Oh great ,more clothes designed in Estonia

and made in Malaysia coming to Lincoln Center.

I was wondering who was building a house that huge for years. Thanks for the info.

  • Rocknrope

Remember when he opened the store specifically for a drug addled Anna Nicole Smith, then tried to get into her pants in the back of a limo? God that was a sad sight to catch on film

  • Cannibal

    Nice tree!

  • exnyer

Are you sure of the house address? I think its 404 Gravesend Neck and value 1.5 not 15 million.

  • gfunk

Wow! That has to be the most out of place abomination of a house that I have ever seen.

But there is no way that place is worth even $5 million.

  • freddynyc

The immediate area residents can't be all that happy - wouldn't it be a downsizing of sorts which would cater to outer-borough residents as well as tourists? (Sorry, but I don't mean to sound condescending, outer-borough residents)

Fashion before intellect- rather appropriate for the sh*theads and breeders living on the Upper West Side.

Don't forget that there's also a brand new Century 21 at the new Rego Park Mall II in Queens (the second NYC location aside from the WTC site). It is never crowded, well stocked, no mayhem, same deals and very clean.

  • Wza

    There's a Century 21 in Bay Ridge.

  • militza

yes, and though it's not as crazy as the one near World Trade, it's still tricky to navigate, search through random items and get thru the small aisles. I'd rather pay the extra money and have everything layed out and easy to find. though I'll admit it does have a good accessory selection :)

  • YAMYAM

why couldn't ikea move up in that place?

  • YAMYAM

no thank you i already bought some from the other guy

  • Potty Boy

European cut = I won't fit it. LOL

  • inoyourider

That place just got a big remodeling not that long ago...

  • Clarice City

This place will be an absolute mob scene. I much prefer shopping in the sobering shadows of the september 11th disaster zone and sharing an open changing room (ladies, you remember)for my shopping experience.

  • Cannibal

oh good somewhere for that god awful collection of Sex in the City merchandise that was sold to Bloomingdales to go to die.
