Tourists Don't Like 15 Penn Plaza Either

082410penn.jpg According to a survey conducted by Penn Schoen Berland, 66% of New York visitors said the new 15 Penn Plaza tower would degrade the character of the New York skyline. Which is dangerous, because 92% of them said seeing the skyline made them excited to visit New York. So much for that record tourism year! ESB owner Anthony Malkin was quick to chime in on the results, saying in a statement, "The results are clear. When NYC residents and visitors learn about 15 Penn Plaza and the prospect it presents, they do not like it...The more they hear about 15 Penn Plaza, the less they like."

I'm a tourist. I've been coming to NYC for the past 12 years - the pace at which changes happens (NOT!!!) is mind boggling. 15 Penn plz will add a welcome new addition to the skyline!!!

  • gagneur

This building offends the sensibilities of Penn Station survivors and should be moved a couple of blocks..

  • jenchungsmerkin

must have been on a heroin bender for long long time...what year is it? when did we start giving a f$ck about what fly-over country thinks?

  • izsosick

greenbaum says that this building will create jobs. there are plenty of office space available in nyc already. don't need another bloated office space tower.

  • BeastMode

Build it! Agree with ADB in first post. Malkin sounds like a total prick.

I'm an occasional tourist to NYC (mostly because of the architecture) and i don't like this at all. The proposed building itself isn't that great but I don't hate it as far as modern office towers go, but it's a moronic location. It really would impede on the ESB, we're talking about the King of Skyscrapers after all, give it the respect it deserves and some breathing room!

Not to mention the old Penn hotel that is going to bite the dust on this site just needs a little TLC and it could be really quite lovely.

Come on NY step it up!

  • Billiamsburg

Agreed. I'm all for new buildings usually but I don;t like the way this pushes into the ESB. That movie Empire would have SUCKED with another tower photobombing it.

  • Amalek

And who paid for this survey?

  • Think2wice

Anthony Malkin was quick to chime in on the results

Gin! We need more gin! People aren't scared enough.

  • eyekantspel

nothing a pointy top and a little chrome can't fix.

  • JGNY

It is a shame that a building this large is as boring as this one is. It is bland, shiny, and is symbolic of corporate mediocrity. It is 100+ stories of meh.

  • People come for an interesting skyline; true. Which is more interesting-- a skyscraper, or...nothing?

    Yeah, gimmmie 15 Penn.

  • exnyer

"The skyline made them excited to visit New York" along with one of the most depressed currencies around, the American dollar,....Eurasia tourists are getting the bargain of a lifetime.

  • TeddyNYC

It's not the bargain that it was even one year ago. Some analysts predict that the dollar and euro will reach parity (1=1) next year.

  • exnyer

Hope so, after paying $3.75 for a coke and $12.00 for a Big Mac meal across the pond, 1=1 would be about right.

  • Såkandulæredet

Besides the developers, who actually likes it? Anyone? If you don't care that doesn't count... you have to actually like it.

  • Think2wice

    I like it.

  • ADB

I think this has more to do with keeping rents high in midtown and reducing competition than it has anything at all to do with the scenic integrity of the NYC skyline.

No one was too concerned about the skyline back in the 1920s when all these giant buildings were going up in the first place.

And will Malkin be upset when the WTC tower finally breaks the horizon? "People have become accustomed to the big fat hole in the sky, the WTC tower project must therefore stop."

  • Splicer

It's a lot more sunny in Lower Manhattan thanks to al Qaeda.
