The Family That Drinks Together Drives Separately

82410dwi.jpg A charming family tale from upstate NY: according to the Poughkeepsie Journal, police officers were operating a checkpoint in East Fishkill Sunday between midnight and 5 a.m., when they stopped a car after observing marijuana paraphernalia inside. Two 18-year-old boys and two 15-year-old girls were detained, and their parents were called. The 46-year-old mother of one of the girls was observed to be intoxicated upon her arrival, and arrested. Two hours later, the same child’s 45-year-old father drove through the checkpoint and was observed to be intoxicated, and was also arrested. Both parents were charged with DWI's.

When did East Fishkill turn into Upstate NY? It's in the Hudson Valley or downstate NY.

  • kromelizard

Upstate is anything north of the City, Long Island and Westchester. Accepted usage varies only in those benighted hicktown backwaters that comprise said upstate region.

Way to be ignorant. So Rockland is Upstate yet right across the Hudson is???

When I moved to Syracuse for grad school in the late 1990s, I made the mistake of referring to Syracuse as "upstate New York" and was quickly corrected by a local who said that Syracuse is not upstate, but "Central New York."

That's when I developed this formula for determining what's upstate New York:

Upstate New York = Anything North Of Where You're From

That'd make Poughkeepsie upstate for Gothamist.
