Video: Confrontation At Yesterday's Mosque Rally

82310rally.jpg Tensions almost came to a head at yesterday's heated rally over the planned mosque and community center near Ground Zero. A man wearing a white athletic skull cap was mistaken for a Muslim as he walked through the crowd, which prompted an angry confrontation, all of which was captured on video. One protester in a blue hard hat calls him a "coward" at one point, which almost incited a fight; later, someone chants "Mohammed is a pig." You can see the full video below.

  • I'd like to see Sacha Baron Cohen try and show up. In Borat, he was mistaken for a Muslim, I'm sure it would be funny to see these fools turn on him

These people are obviously "Real New Yorkers"probably have been there before most of the commenters here have been born. I feel bad for these people, this is a very very sensitive issue and they feel very hurt. Many of them probably lost friends and family in 9/11. That said, their frustrations are misguided, the Park51 is just a convenient physical location to take out their understandable frustrations upon...

It's as though you mean what you say...almost funny, but really just sad.

  • matty

care to elaborate or do you just make your trolling purposely vague?

  • psquire

what are you talking about? You can spot a "real" new yorker, and can also tell the age of commenters online? "Many of them probably lost friends and family in 9/11"? Wow. Anything else you want to just make up?

  • soxinthecity

That dude with the skullcap could have been a Republican until he walked down that street. There is no chance that he ever would be again.

  • wow 14th street

I would go to the Mosque if they put a

    WalMart in there.

    did someone say NAZI

  • Mr. Know-It-All

A riot is an ugly thing . . . and I think it's just about time we had one!

  • RDR105

    Ugh...this people make me Sick!

What a bunch or ignorant retards.. Just when u think NY is different. Same white trash!

  • robingee

NYC isn't really the melting pot everyone says it is... people tend to live in neighborhoods with people like them, which is fine, but then they end up disliking people from other neighborhoods.

  • JacqueMehoff

NYC and NYS isn't very much different, it's very race segregated. those people live out on LI and even further out in suffolk county. and you know there was a time in America when the Irish and the Italians were considered Black. I betting there are quite a few Irish and Italians in that crowd. not only that but I'm willing to say they were not considered Americans. odd, right?

  • Crapola

It's ashame idiots like these and the attempt of certain families to distinguish their loved ones from all the other victims has desensitized myself and I'm sure a lot of other NY'ers to the tragedy of that day. This, coming from someone who lost a family member.

  • This isn't about race. The people opposed to Park51 aren't racists. They just think brown people are destroying America. Anybody who is brown could be a spy for Mexican Terrorist Islamic Anchor Babies. ANYBODY brown. Even the president. Especially the president. Did I mention that they hate brown people but they definitely aren't racists? No. Not racists, just hate anybody who isn't white.

  • SP's Ghost

Or isn't Christian. (Jews are just tolerable these days. The enemy of your enemy is your friend and all that rot.)

  • even more 'interesting' is that many people organizing and funding these anti-Islam groups, are people like Geller who are Jewish and big Israel supporters...

IMO this is not surprising. having Americans equate Hamas/hizbolla with AlQueda and see all muslims as fantatical terrorists is an ongoing campagin. Check out the great video 'planet of the arabs' on you tube.

  • Oh gay, which might possibly be worse than brown. It is a toss up.

  • Eric

I am so embarrassed to be a NYer right now.

  • Tuna Loaf

They're not from New York, they're from Staten Island.

  • Stutter

    1) The video doesn't show the entire incident. We have no idea what actually transpired. You see a crowd reacting to a person of color in a tight fitting skull cap... if he was heckling the speakers, or voicing pro-Mosque opinions, off camera, that would paint a different story. How can we judge?

    2) This proves the Mosque will inflame tensions, and incite needlessly. It's avoidable. Mosques are built all the time without this much interest...clearly this location is a problem.
