Spoiler Alert! The L Train Is Coming

Ever since the MTA started putting up those LED schedules in the subways, New Yorkers have been plagued by the knowledge that trains are arriving, even if they didn't want to know! Now Newmindspace and Jason Eppink are protecting straphangers from learning of arriving trains too soon. Eppink explains:

[The LED signs'] primary effect, then, is to erode faith in the system, to create expectations that can’t always be met, to raise false hopes, and to erase the mystery and magic of the wondrous system that transports more than five million riders a day....The Spoiler Alert signs warn waiting riders of this potentially unwanted information - allowing them to avert their eyes so they may preserve their spirit of adventure - while still leaving visible the data for travelers who wish to ruin the surprise for themselves.

So, will the MTA be quick to take down the signs, or will they realize that some people haven't ridden the entire system yet and don't want to know what happens next?

God, I hate newmindspace.. yes.. you are so "creative"

    ugh...

  • whitecastlerock

At least these are allegedly working-along the #6 line I see numerous devices suspended from the ceiling still in shrink wrap

  • Sketto

Don't mind the sign, but can we please chill with the constant, awful, grating "Ladies and Gentlemen. The next. Brooklyn-bound. L train. Will arrive in approximately. 5 minutes." And then they announce "the following train". I hate those announcements. It's overkill.

  • isla

This is why our culture is degrading. You cannot be bothered with formalities and consideration.

(Can you even read this if it's not in L33T?!)

  • jaycjay

I agree with that. The signs are fine; do away with the audio repeating the same information that is already there.

  • isla

And you through even more consideration out the window, if that's even possible!

How about the blind? Those who cannot read? And those who cannot see the sign (because the last time I checked, you cannot see them from every vantage point on the platform)?

Or is it just all about you?!

  • isla

    throw*

I am throwing correct spelling out the window! But who needs it when no one can spell anyway? And it's all about me anyway! I can L33T if I wanna!

  • Notice that half the commenters of this blog think everything they post is stupid. So, um, why do you still read and comment?

Living in SF for about five years, I really took tech like this for granted until I moved back here. You grow to rely on it very quickly, especially on bus lines. I'm glad it's here, even in limited form. (The next step is an app that pulls this data from the aether and displays it on your iPhone/Android/pocket calculator.)

And some of you need to get the stick out of your ass. I gave that pic a healthy chuckle. Not a full on guffaw, though. It was pre-morning coffee.

  • ceeg

    The following.....L.....train....will be arriving in....

Do these announcements help anybody? I can't stand the endless loop.

  • JayNYC

    Hipsters are FUNNY!

    no, no they're not.

  • Think2wice

    Oh the irony.

  • kdub

I want my two minutes back.

  • Gothamist_Cynic

The L train is getting worse than the G train.

  • isla

I am glad the G train loves me. I'll take my G train commute over my L train commute any day (quicker on the G from Brooklyn to the UES than the L from the East side of the city).

I prefer people to keep perpetuating the G train stereotypes from 10 years ago though because it keeps my rent low and my trains un-sardine-can-packed! Thank you, people without critical thinking skills!

  • exnyer

In London where trains are 1-3 minutes apart you like seeing the sign, in NYC......next train 20 minutes it`s ugly.

  • Nikki

It's worth noting these photos were taken at a time the tube doesn't even operate

  • exnyer

Who is on the subways at 3:00am?......criminals, gang bangers, homeless.....and you hope Bernhard Goetz.

  • jaycjay

I am, a few times a week. Apparently you haven't been since sometime in the mid-80s.

  • exnyer

Not in a while but next time "I feel lucky today" this punk, on your advice, will catch a 3:00am A train and ride all the way to Mott. If I feel really lucky I will get off and get a sack of ten for the ride back.

  • TeddyNYC

Maybe exnyer is expecting them to come out of "hibernation" soon and with this economy, he/she may be right.

  • jaycjay

I still want to know. Though it would be better if they were visible before passing through the turnstiles, because sometimes I'd choose a different option if I knew the next train wouldn't be coming for 20 minutes.

  • jaycjay

"These LED signs also threaten historical social behaviors, rendering obsolete the time-honored New York tradition of leaning over the platform edge with the hope of glimpsing headlights from an approaching train."

    No, people still do that.

I only ride the L a few times a week, but I like the LED signs. And I've never seen them be incorrect -- though I have seen them change to a longer wait when a train is being delayed. And I found that information to be very helpful.

  • slyseekr

    Sarcastic hipster snark.

Both the signs and this article.

  • djwerdna

    stupid.

  • tbraun

Spoiler Alert: Really. what about the 1/2 BILLION dollars the MTA lost in Auction Rate Securities which probably enriched its officials? Stupid, greedy investments by public officials leading to service cuts during a miserable recession. what about that?

  • Såkandulæredet

    What is this stupidity?

  • youngpro

so just re-calibrating the clocks negates the whole "erode faith in the system, to create expectations that can’t always be met, to raise false hopes, and to erase the mystery and magic" argument, right?

  • youngpro

    stupid hipsters.

  • lexicondevil

You should have put 'spoiler alert' before this article. That sign might have been funny if I had stumbled across it myself.

  • CR

    Cute.

    I hate it.

  • Mr Mel

Jaya's article or the LED signs?

  • CR

    Nah, just joshin'.
