Sweet Bike Path Will Connect New Brooklyn Bridge Parks

Brownstoner discovers (and the NY Post confirms) that a new bike path will soon connect Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1 to Pier 6. The pretty string of waterfront parks partially opened this spring, first with the expansive, hilly Pier 1 at Fulton Ferry Landing. This was followed by Pier 6, which opened in June with a playground and a ferry dock at the end of Atlantic Avenue.

The path will stretch 15 blocks from Atlantic Avenue to Old Fulton Street, winding through almost the entire 1.3-mile waterfront park. According to the Post, the path is meant to be shared by cyclists and pedestrians, so get your popcorn ready for yet another round of the bike lane battle royale. And since this is Brooklyn Heights, there are sure to be strollers involved, too!

I'm having a mental block. What do you call that bicyclist symbol? There's a term for it, isn't there?

Got to be better than walking down Furman Street under the BQE. There aren't that many cars on it, but those that are go like the clappers and the sidewalk has seen better days.

admittedly skeptical about the bike route, considering the tight space under the bqe. i welcome the parks and the new bike paths (long over due!) with open arms but curious about the decision the route the lanes through the parks, crossed with pedestrians. it wouldn't be so bad so long as the main road is free to still ride through, but that too seems to be narrowing. not sure why the bike bath isn't along the main road? ah well, excited overall

They never get that right. Pedestrians, wanting to enjoy the scenery, will always drift into the bike lane, and some cyclists will always want to whizz down the pedestrian lane. There should always be a concrete barrier between the walkers and the bicyclists...
