"Islam Welcome" Sign Missing from "Ground Zero" Mosque Site

081710mosque2.jpg There was once a sign in front of the Lower Manhattan building that the nonprofit Cordoba Initiative plans to tear down to build a 15-story Islamic community center. The sign read, "Islam Is Welcome Here," but would you believe that the sign is now missing, and that some people don't want to welcome their Muslim brothers and sisters? MyFoxNY discovered the sign was gone while shooting a segment on the "Ground Zero" mosque this morning. According to MyFoxNY, "It is unclear who had erected the sign and who removed it." Hmm, has anyone checked the back of the Fox news van?

In other late-breaking mosque news, NY1 landed an exclusive interview with the project's developer, Sharif El-Gamal. According to a tweet from NY1 reporter Josh Robin, El-Gamal declared, "This is a defining moment for the Muslim Americans across all 52 states." (To be fair, he was probably including Iraq and Afghanistan.) El-Gamal's gaffe has been edited out of the NY1 segment, but elsewhere in the interview El-Gamal reiterates that he will not accept Governor Paterson's offer to accommodate the project somewhere else on state property. (Earlier today Rep. Peter King (R-Anti-Mosqueville) told Politico that Governor Paterson would be meeting with El-Gamal this week, but that has not been confirmed by Paterson's staff.)

And finally tonight, Salon's published a thorough Snopes-esque timeline of how the "Ground Zero" mosque controversy got inflamed in the first place, tracing it back to wannabe Anne Coulter blogger Pamela Geller. Five quiet months passed between the NY Times' front page feature on the project in December and Andrea Peyser's first inaccurate rant in the Post ("The opening date shall live in infamy: Sept. 11, 2011!"). Geller was quoted in Peyser's column at length, and Salon sees the blogger's demagogic fingerprints all over the anti-mosque movement. Maybe there's a Webby Award in this for her!

I'm strongly against all unnecessarily ornate buildings that spread fairy tales and lies about the invisible pink unicorn.

Help me. I'm trapped on Earth along with all of this shit. And there is nowhere else to go.

  • wow 14th street

The EU is terrified of having Turkie join them and now

it looks as if it will not happen, I wonder why Europe

is so afraid? could it be that Turkie will be soon with

a bloody takeover another Iran ?

This is more relevant than a sign being removed the EU

are afraid of an Islamic take over of the world.

  • I can only parse half of what you said...

FYI - Turkey is a member of Nato. They had troops fighting with us back in the 50s in Korea and today in Afghanstan.

The US airforce has two key bases in Turkey. Apparently they even have store thermonuclear weapons at the bases.

agree to disagree like adults :) good stuff!

And if they wind up building this mosque, it is what it is. 100% of the people will never be happy, but hey that's life. I'm not hating on this in anyway. It's the American process. Look at the elections it's always 51% to 49% recently. Half the country is never happy. Whatever lol

    have a good night

  • True enough...

you all should read this article by NY Daily News' Mike Lupica. I rarely agree with Lupica on his politics, but this article says it all and says it better that I could.

Everyone stop the name calling and the nonsense. Act like adults and not school yard children. Anyone can be an Internet tough guy yelling in all caps and calling names to try and get their point across, but in reality you all (both sides) look un-educated and closed minded. It's ok to be wrong and it's ok to listen to someone elses opinion. You never know, you might learn something. So move over from the right and move over from the left and let's have a grown up discussion in the middle.

  • I saw Mike Lupica's article and while I respect him, IMO, he's wrong.

  • ides_of_march

Oddly enough, I don't have much respect for Lupica (he's Keith Olbermann in print) but in this case he's the broken clock getting the time right twice a day.

    To S.D.

Re: the Staten Island Mosque, it was the neighborhood that fought that being there not all the same people trying to block the Ground Zero mosque. And like I said I think that is based on racisim and 100% wrong.

Re: Ground Zero mosque, true some families have come out in favor of it, but it is also hurting alot of others. This is why I say it is insensitive. Many families affected have also come out against it. In MOST cases not all, I feel that race is Not a factor in not wanting the mosque at Ground Zero. I can at least speak for myself of that. True that some people will just hate on this because they are Muslim and that is not only wrong it's racist.

Re: Newt and others, please re-read what I wrote regarding non-New Yorkers opinions on this. This is Not their business and this should not be a national discussion. This is for us to debate and we should do so like adults and not yell or call names.

This should is also not about bullying people. This annoys me when people say things like that. Why can't we have discussion on this subject with out name calling? Are people not entitled to have feelings? This goes for both sides.

I believe in this county and all the rights given to us ALL. Am I not allowed to see this buildings as being

    insensitive?

If you really read everything I wrote you would see that there is no bullying or racisim involved in my opinion.

Also are you familar with the Iman's comments regarding 9/11? You should look them up, it's not cool at all. I'd be intrested in your opinion of that.

But like I said regadless of those ridiclous comments, this location should be re-considered.

  • "Re: the Staten Island Mosque, it was the neighborhood that fought that being there not all the same people trying to block the Ground Zero mosque. And like I said I think that is based on racisim and 100% wrong."

In all due respect, We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. IMO, they're the same crowd.

    "Re: Newt and others"

Fair enough, but does Rep. King count? What about Andrea Peyser and her out right lies (Not opening on 9/11/11...) and her "logic" that if you disagree with her, her rights are trampled? She is a NY'er.

"Am I not allowed to see this buildings as being

    insensitive?
    "

Absolutely, I never implied otherwise. I do disagree with your points, nothing more.

"If you really read everything I wrote you would see that there is no bullying or racisim involved in my opinion."

I think you misunderstand me. The forces applying pressure (nationally and locally) are, IMO, trying to bully them.

"Also are you familar with the Iman's comments regarding 9/11? You should look them up, it's not cool at all. I'd be intrested in your opinion of that."

While I disagree with his 9/11 statements, that's part of the freedom we all enjoy. IMO, his opinion has nothing to do with this. Apparently the FBI (he works with them) think so too.

"But like I said regadless of those ridiclous comments, this location should be re-considered."

Well, again we disagree on that, but at least we can be civil about it.

  • ides_of_march

    Racism?

When did Islam become a race?

Tell me, what race are Muslims?

  • ides_of_march

Yeah, Fox News hires such right wing ideologues as Geraldo Rivera, Greta van Susteren and until recently, Alan Colmes. G-d forbid there should be one - just one - major TV news outlet that isn't lock-step liberal. Here we have Stalinist liberals pontificating on tolerance yet they can't even tolerate a slightly right of center worldview. It wasn't Fox News anchors that knocked down the Twin Towers, it was 19 muslims who did it in the name of Allah. Yet where is all your outrage directed? You are deranged.

  • robingee

Meh, it was mostly Saudis that knocked down the Towers but are we invading Saudi Arabia? Naw, we looooove their yummy, yummy oil!

  • ides_of_march

I do agree with you there. This country's addiction to middle eastern oil, and refusal do drill domestically has completely perverted our foreign policy. I'll go a step further and say that the Saudis have bought and paid for large portions of our government.

  • unretrofiedforu

Drilling isn't the answer. A proper and REAL alternative energy plan is.

If you don't understand that, please re-enroll in the 3rd grade.

  • speaking of oil addiction, I found this interesting.

"sales of pickup trucks to jump 29 per cent; SUVs are up 17 per cent"

  • MrManhattan

But the Saud family is financially interdependent with the Bush Family (same with the Bin Ladens), so until a year and a half go, an attack on our attackers would be an attack on the sitting president's family. Where is your patriotism?

(not to mention that killer photo-op with Bush standing on the still-smoldering bodies which turned out to be so useful for the '04 campaign!)

  • Petey

    "It's George Bush's Fault"

Guess what, he's been out of office for 1 1/2 years now. GET OVER HIM ALREADY. When will it not be his fault? When you can blame it on the next republican?
