It's tough out there for an independent purveyor of frozen dessert products! Just about all the prime spots belong to Mister Softee, and that company's drivers are notoriously gangsta when it comes to protectingtheir turf. Watch this video to see what happens when a generic ice cream truck driver tries to occupy another driver's "spot" near Columbus Circle. (Skip ahead to the 2 minute mark for the fisticuffs.)
In the video, the spectators identifies one of the trucks as a Mister Softee truck, but Jim Conway, V.P. of Mister Softee, tells us, "Neither driver or truck is affiliated with Mister Softee. Both are independent ice cream vendors." Well, whoever they are, they're taking the ice cream vendor's job just a little too seriously. [Via NYC the Blog]

When I was in college, at Pace, I once sat around between classes with a hot dog vendor and since I saw him making so much money I asked him how to get into the business. He was a nice older gentleman and we spoke about the licensing and stuff but then I asked him what's to stop someone from taking over his location, because he had a great spot right in front of the Supreme Court. That's when he got weird and said "they" won't allow it. I kept asking him who "they" were and he wouldn't answer but he kept saying "them" and "they" and told me a story about how someone tried to set up shop on the corner and he called "them"and "they" flipped over the guys cart and roughed him up. I then confirmed with other street vendors that there was some kind of group or mafia that some of these vendors paid protection money to secure their locations but this was years ago and in lower Manhattan so I don't know if such a thing still exists.
I think the city is going to have to start regulating when and where these guys can operate because we're starting to see more and more of these incidents.

A food vendor Mafia? Amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if such an organization existed (Or maybe still exists).
I'm pretty sure the Halal Food cart on 53rd and 6th is protected. They must bring down more money than the Flashdancers stripclub around the block.

If city continues to grant permits to these whack jobs, we will see more and more violence. City knows how to make money, charge thousands of dollars for license, and then let them fight each other, like the street vendors, fruits whatever, not to mention the disgusting street meat they sell on thirtywhatever street.. Smoke alone is enough to tell you it is biohazard there..

Does this remind anybody else of the rather obscure 1984 Bill Forsyth movie 'Comfort and Joy'? Battling ice cream truck companies (Mr. Bunny and Mr. McCool) war over turf in Glasgow. Hilarity ensues.
