Connecticut Teen Shot in "Mistaken Identity" Drive-By

081410gun.jpg A teenage boy from Connecticut visiting his dad in the Bronx was killed early this morning in a drive-by shooting, and police believe it was a case of mistaken identity. Tashawn Bromfield was sitting on his dad's stoop in Eastchester Heights around 12:40 a.m. with a friend and drinking a Slurpee when shots rang from a four-door sedan driving by. Bromfield was hit in the chest. His father's girlfriend told the Daily News, "He was on the ground bleeding everywhere. I was in bed when I heard the shots and then I hear his friend screaming 'Tashawn's been shot!' We ran, out but it was too late."

Police know of no motive for the murder, and are investigating surveillance footage to see whether Bromfield may have been mistaken for a target of a gang shooting. His friend's mother said, "He [Tashawn] came to visit and I let my son stay out because he was such a good kid. I told them they could hang out in the courtyard for a little while." Bromfield was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.

Bromfield was one of seven people shot last night in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan, though he was the only fatality. Twenty minutes after he was shot, three were shot on Hull Avenue, and three others were shot in the area between 12:35 a.m. and 2 a.m. Bromfield's mother wrote on Facebook, "my youngest kid and only son has been called home at 16 years old, please keep me in ur prayers fb fam."

Gang membership should warrant a long prison sentence.

    This BS is too much.

I agree, if a person can go to jail for a longer period of time for what they define as a "hate" crime then a senseless "gang" crime should warrant the same treatment. And I'm not referring to gang members attacking each other but the coldblooded callousness of senseless gang initiation crimes need their own classification like "hate" crimes.

Bloomberg please, Ray Kelly has to go. I know he's a nice guy but people are dying, gangs are taking over and his only solution are "Stop & Frisks" that aren't solving anything. We need new leadership with new ideas.

It's doesn't take Compstat statistics to realize that crime is going dramatically. This administration can play with these numbers all they want but the bottom line is that at this point they're only fooling themselves. Meanwhile, gang membership is rising and they are becoming more and more brazen. People are getting mugged, robbed and murdered and all this administration is concerned with is if NYPD is giving enough summons for silly infractions by otherwise law abiding citizens.

We need a new mayor but in the meantime at least a new police commissioner.

Now are the police going to do something about gangs or just let more people die? Declare all gangs as terrorist organizations and sweep them up and all their known associates. Time to put the fear of God into these "tough guys".

They are the foot soldiers of the "community".

However stands in their way suffer the wrath of special interests.
