Dov Charney Declares Death Of Hipsterdom

amerappnewlook.jpg
The prepster?
Dov Charney, founder of American Apparel and a walking caricature of Hipster, declared in a recent Business Week interview that, "Hipster is over." So over. Maybe he blames the group for his failing business, which could soon become delisted on the NYSE; either way, the determined little clothing cockroach refuses to die along with them!

To get back on top, he's pulling out all the punches... or pleats, as it were. BW explains that "after outfitting the world of 18-to-30-year-olds in all manner of T-shirts and leggings, American Apparel is going preppy, diving into more sophisticated garments such as blazers, pleated pants, button-down shirts, and more formal lace tops." You know who will eat this '80s prep stuff up? Hipsters!

Charney believes that "kids are moving away from piercings," and says he wants "to grow old with our customer. We want to be a traditional American clothier." And nothing says traditional like a hot pink Nylon Spandex Micro-Mesh Bodysuit.

    Hipster = style-obsessed, gadget consumerist.

    That is all.

  • robingee

I declare that Dov Charney is a creepy perv.

  • Cannibal

So does that really mean the birth of Hipsterdom?

Hipsters aren't dead. They should make baby clothes.

There's alot of hate on here.

I've never bought anything in American Apparel because their styles don't appeal to me but I wish they did because I would love to support them. This is an American company manufacturing their clothing right here in the U.S.A. and everyone wants them to go under because they don't like their styles or the people who wear them? Come on, really? No wonder this country is in so much trouble, we don't support our own. I remember when I was young people still looked for the "Made in the U.S.A." tag. I remember the commercials "Hey, Hey What do say? This was made in the USA!" but now everyone wants to see an American company that manufactures in the USA go under because of their fashion style, GTFOH!

    From American Apparel's website:
"Our average factory worker makes $12 to $14 dollars an hour -the highest pay worldwide for the manufacturing of apparel basics, and significantly more than California's minimum wage. For us, higher pay means heightened efficiency, a better and more consistent quality of work, stronger employee morale, and ultimately, retention rates of skilled operators. For them, higher pay is often a path to the American Dream for their families.

"We don't have to do things this way, we just believe it's the right way.

We employ more than 5,000 people in our LA area manufacturing facilities, making us one of the largest apparel manufacturing employers in the country. This, in a state with unprecedented unemployment and an unprecedented budget deficit. American Apparel keeps Californians, keeps Americans, working, and in doing so contributes millions of dollars annually to the State and country's tax base, as well as the local economies in which our employees live. http://www.americanapparel.net/verticalintegration/

But everyone wants to see them go and replaced by another chain selling lower quality but more expensive clothing made in some third world sweatshop.

That's why this country is going to shit. We don't support our own businesses and even even when they do right we throw dirt on them. We deserve to have double digit unemployment.

I wish American Apparel luck and will try to support them, like they support our American workers.

    W3RD.

  • Mr. Know-It-All

I know I looked like just as big a fool in my Tony Manero wannabe polyester three-piece suit and platform shoes in 1977, but that look lasted for maybe 3 seasons before going the way of the dodo. This shit has become the undead of the fashion world. It needs to be set adrift on an ice floe in the Antarctic, then let global warming take care of the rest.

Don't listen to that wicked man, trustfunders, the magic will never die! 2006 forever!

  • Potty Boy

What does this mean for their um...ads?

  • jibbly

Hopefully when VH1 does a "MORE I Love the New Millennium" they'll revisit it with pseudo-mocking, snarky, out of work comedians commenting on it...

    ...IN 3D!!!

  • DrGonzo

I guess hiring porn stars to model your clothing was a waste of money eh Charney?

  • Everything I've read about the company-- Dov Charney loathing aside, hipster-hating aside, harassment lawsuits aside-- make it sound like it is financially tanking in an unstoppable way. Like, the leaks can't be clogged, the water can't be bailed, abandon ship.

  • squatch

    1. charney is a complete tool

    2. AA clothing is cheap-o, poorly-made crap. stuff at old navy that costs half as much is of better quality.

i don't give one damn if AA survives another minute

  • REALITY CHECK

The reason why Old Navy's clothing is cheaper is because they're made overseas in countries with less labor protections.

  • squatch

so i should buy more expensive, inferior products from a company run by a scumbag asshole douchbag JUST because the stuff is made in the good ol' US of A?

    no chance in hell

  • grizzzly

I hope this doesn't mean the end of lurid Gothamist advertising

  • junglisticman

PS Who is this guy to declare anything?

  • junglisticman

For the sake of his employees I hope the company does not go under. For the sake of ridding this world of horrible fashion and girls looking really fucking ugly as a result I hope this change is permanent and across all of the lines.

  • Alamo L7

Does this mean we are entering a post-hipster era??? http://en.wikipedia.com/wiki/post-hipster

  • Mr. Know-It-All

From your link: "Post-hipster is an aesthetic, literary, political or social movement which is the basis of the attempt to describe a condition, or a state of being, or something concerned with changes to subculture conditions as 'posthip'."

This kind of circular nonsense is why so many people in the sciences scoff at so many of the humanities' attempts to "theorize" their disciplines.
