Guess The Year: Shocking Edition

guesstheyear0811.jpg

You know the drill: guess the year this photograph was taken (and maybe what in the world could have shocked this woman so much?). We'll update later with the answer and more details.

UPDATE: Most of you were correct, this is the expression of shock a woman gave upon hearing the news of John F. Kennedy's assassination, taken in Manhattan on November 22nd, 1963. Below is video which begins showing reactions from a crowd of people near reporter Gabe Pressman's car in New York City, hearing the same news for the first time:

And another, which gets reactions from New Yorkers on the street (around the 1:20 mark):

I worked on 6th avenue then at a commerical photgographers
studio ,the whole city seeemingly shut down by the afternoon.
We also had newspapers delivered to new stands known as the afternoon edition .

I love the first guy interviewed on the 2nd clip- "I don't feel expert enough to express an opinion..."

If only today's "Moron on the Street" interviewees felt the same. Or Faux News anchors, for that matter.

2010 - she just saw a rat w/huge balls hanging out of a guy's mouth on the 6 train

Hehehe-that made me crack up :-)

  • Potty Boy

    yeah, good one.

1963 impala in the background, so the JFK is probably right.

  • Lost in Space

Definitely the day of JFK's assassination. 11/22/63.

  • Don't recognize the newspaper typeface. That automatically makes it before 1968 for me. The cars suggest early 60s, as do the hats.

The JFK assassination sounds about right. The coats suggest that it could be Novemeber.

1959, didn't want her picture taken.

  • chuzzlewit

1957. she ran out of gin.

    +10 for dramatic motivation

There seem to be lots of these kinds of pictures of people reacting to the JFK assassination taken from the inside of television storefronts. We have one of my grandmother watching a television broadcast taken from inside a shop window.

Using the same logic as the above guessers: if it's already in the newspapers and she's this shocked by the level of crazy, maybe it's Jack Ruby's shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald, 1963.

  • jibbly

I would say the attack on Pearl Harbor, but the cars in the background don't fit 1941.

So I'll jump on the JFK assassination bandwagon, 11/22/1963

Don Draper was wearing a hat in the Christmas episode of Mad Men two weeks ago, and that was supposed to be 1964.

  • Sketto

The cars say 1960's which means JFK, but were guys still wearing hats back then?

  • schadenfreudian mensch

    She looks like Lois Lane.

  • Splicer

You're right. Noel Neil finds out George Reeves is dead and she's out of a job.

  • barryap

It HAS to be JFK. But since that's been guessed, I'll go with RFK.

May 1, 1947, the most beautiful suicide
