Livery Cab Hits Bronx Bus Shelter, 1 Dead, 6 Injured

Just before 11 a.m., a livery cab slammed into a bus shelter at University Ave. and West Kingsbridge Road in the Bronx. WCBS 2 reports that one man in his 70s was killed while six others were injured: "Witnesses tell 1010 WINS reporter Steve Sandberg that a mini-van trying to make an illegal U-turn caused the accident. The livery cab apparently swerved to avoid the van, lost control and then plowed into the bus stop shattering the glass shelter. Witnesses say there were four people at the bus shelter and two others were hurt by a bench that went flying after the crash."

Fernando Mateo, the spokesman for the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, gave a statement before the fatality was reported, "This was clearly an accident and the seven people injured are in our prayers."

Livery cab drivers are some of worst drivers in the city. There is no doubt that this guy was speeding and had to cross a double yellow and TWO lanes of oncoming traffic before crashing into the bus stop. If someone makes a stupid move in front of you, you don't go ape shit and lose control of your car - unless you're going to f-ing fast.

I wonder if he was on the horn when he was crashing, because we all know how much gypsy cab drivers love their horns.

You and Boogie Down are completely right. There's no way to lose control like that unless he didn't have control of his own car in the first place. This kind of story so enrages me - the disaster is so unnecessary - and that Fernando Mateo is a POS mouthpiece. This kind of story makes me almost glad that one of them gets shot every once in a while. There's no other justice in this world.

I live in Harlem and drivers up there are constantly making illegal u-turns, backing around a corner to get a space, etc. It's unbelieveable.

Boogie Down

While the cab driver may not have been the cause of the accident, he was clearly speeding (as evidenced by the wreckage) and should be charged. It is doubtful that will actually happen though since it's apparently legal to kill people with cars here.
