An eight-year NYPD veteran is suspended without pay after a violent dispute with her girlfriend Monday morning in their Harlem apartment. Police sources tell the tabloids that the fight started around 3:15 a.m. when Officer Ekeythia Dunston, 32, received a text message from another woman. Dunston, who works out of the 108th Precinct in Long Island City, had just returned home with her 42-year-old partner, Erica LeGall, from a booze cruise.

When LeGall saw the text come in, she allegedly went postal, grabbing a clothes iron and hitting Dunston across her skull, leaving a "tennis-ball-sized welt" on her head, a source tells the Daily News. Then Dunston produced a pistol; a neighbor tells the News she heard these shouts: "No! No! No! Don't shoot!" Polices say Dunston fired twice, striking LeGall once in the thigh and once in her shoulder. Their two sons—Jayleen, 7, who is LeGall's, and Daichoi, 13, who is Dunston's—were asleep in their room and were unharmed, as was their babysitter.

LeGall was taken to Harlem Hospital, where she's listed in critical but stable condition. She's charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Dunston, who the Post points out happens to be the niece of former Met Shawon Dunston, was treated for her head injury at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia. She was arrested and charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. Meanwhile, the city's Administration for Children's Services has taken the boys into their care.

Can I ask what their orientation has to do with this?

"HETEROSEXUAL POLITICIAN BEATS GIRLFRIEND" wasn't how the Monserrate debacle was publicized.

"And besides that, criminal possession of a weapon? Even though she is a cop?"

Good chance that means it wasn't her duty gun or an authorized and registered off-duty carry weapon.

Don't you have the right to defend yourself is someone is hitting you upside the head with an iron? Have you? It's no joke. And besides that, criminal possession of a weapon? Even though she is a cop? Makes no sense! I'm sure it has some sort of legal ties, but logically it's stupid. What about all those times cops on duty shoot individuals who are unarmed? They never get charged with criminal possession...even though this woman was being assaulted by her lover! If the lover was a man, people would be applauding her! I wonder if this has to do with her being a black lesbian... there is NO equality in the justice system. If you are rich or white...forget about it...and if you are both- ha, don't get into a fight with one! You will lose.

    New York's Finest!

Shouldn't two gunshots be considered more than just an assault?

If she wasn't a member of the NYPD wouldn't she be charged with attempted murder?

One of the gunshots hit her in the shoulder, that's pretty close to your head.

so fake, I just saw this on a rerun episode of Cagney and Lacey last week

    Mets suck!

I heard Kima was tired of her girl hounding her to get off the force. Sure, it put her in the line of fire, but the streets were in her blood. As soon as she heard of the new sting op the team had cooked up she just couldn't stand to be out of the action. So she shot the bitch.

Kima would never be this stupid

    They were just fussin'.

Just returned home from a booze cruise at 3am. So who was watching their kids?

I guess when you open fire in your own home with kids sleeping in another room, your parenting judgement is suspect.

  • fuboy

The article says that there was a babysitter in the room with the two children. I would presume that she was there for the duration of the booze cruise.

And I would question if Dunston's firing of the gun is an indication of bad parenting. She was attacked, with a damn iron. Getting hit with one is no joke, and if she were on duty, it would be considered appropriate self defense if she still felt threatened.

Of course, if someone's screaming 'Don't Shoot' so loud that a neighbor hears it, then she's probably not a threat. Either way, both were at fault for fueling a drunken situation with violence and rage. But I'd place more blame on LeGall for striking first.

Read. It says "Their two sons—Jayleen, 7, who is LeGall's, and Daichoi, 13, who is Dunston's—were asleep in their room and were unharmed, as was their babysitter."

  • Rocknrope

I either missed that line about the babysitter or it was added afterwards.

  • hotstepper

couldn't they have just oil-wrestled their angry away?
