Sheepshead Bay Says No To Sex Shop

The Sheepshead Bay folk aren't taking the idea of a sex shop moving in as lightly as the Park Slope parents did. On Tuesday a store called KamaSutra opened in the neighborhood, and now locals and a local politician are rallying against it. According to the area blog, the risqué window display is, perhaps, a little too provocative.

The shop, owned by a man going by the name of "John," sells lingerie, sex toys, novelties, massage oils, and of course, water pipes—for when you want the total experience. "John" told the blog, “A place like this is going to work anywhere. We’re all the same. We all use lingerie, we use toys. This can work anywhere.”

The store is on the same stretch as a ballet studio, a karate studio, and a kids' store, however—which may not be the best area to be hawking dildos. But since the store doesn't stock pornographic magazines and videos, or have live shows, they can stay put... until the townsfolk come torch the place, that is.

As another sheepshead bay resident, I fully support this store. I'm sick an tired of these "Won't somebody please think of the children"-types. If John put dildos on the store front, he should take them down just to shut these people up--otherwise, I welcome new business.

Don't like the store? Vote with your money and don't shop there.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to make a visit to the store with a lady friend.

I hope someone torches this shithole soon. Great thing for my kids to see on the way to Ballet class, you pieces of trash.

It's rather sad that the residents of Sheepshead are so opposed to the store. Kama Sutra is a reputable brand that has been around for decades. This doesn't look like your classic back alley smut shop, rather it has an attractive front, with a nice tasteful awning.

I live in a small town (16,00 people) and our local store like this www.trinityromance.com open about 6 years ago to no objection. Mainly due to the way the presented and positioned themselves. They've even fundraised thousands of dollars for the local womens shelter, and contributed to public art projects to revitalize the neighborhood.

Perhaps before the residents of Sheepshead come down so heavily on the store, try to see what they're contributing to the fabric of the community. Sexuality is something that shouldn't be shunned, but rather celebrated.

    thanks Gothamist,

    Eva

    Excellent post!

Please note everyone, not all Sheepshead Residents are against the new store. Only a few select loud voices are. I, and many other Sheepsheaders are fully in support of this place.

By the way Gothamist, I'm impressed. You actually linked to the source article this time without just poaching the story! I hope that continues!

The residents of Sheepshead Bay should be happy that any retail wants to move in there. There are empty storefronts all over the place. 5 years ago it was a ghost town, and it's just slightly better now.

    I thought they'd be happy it wasn't a mosque!

Oh noes! The kids might be reminded that they have genitalia!!!

The residents of Sheepshead Bay need to get laid. Perhaps they should pay 'John' a visit.
