"Amityville Horror" House—Sold!

2010_05_amityville.jpg If you had $1.15 million to spare on a lovely, redone Colonial home that happened to inspire the book, "The Amityville Horror," you're going to be disappointed. The so-called "Amityville Horror" house was just sold! Newsday reports that five-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home went into contract this week; the buyers apparently "wanted to get on the water in a big, old classic house."

Back in 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed his parents and four siblings in the home and subsequent owners George and Kathleen Lutz claimed to be haunted for 28 days, which were detailed in the book "The Amityville Horror" (on the cover: "This book will scare the hell out of you"—Kansas City Star). However, another owner of the house said, "Nothing weird ever happened, except for people coming by because of the book and the movie." Which is why they changed the address.

The house was on the market for 70 days, which another broker said was a "very good turn-around time." It's unclear how much the house sold for, but it does look really nice in the listing's photographs.

  • actually the house has 6 bedrooms not 5 as reported above. also, i would have bought this house if i could. as weird as it sounds, this is my ultimate dream house, and not because of its fame. the reported selling price was about $980,000 i believe but i am unsure

I'm sure if PETA had bought it, all those flies that live there would have been happy.

do you just make shit up as you go along?

PETA wasn't "supposed to buy it". PETA's claim that they wanted to buy the place was a publicity stunt pure and simple.

That's a shame. We all would have loved for you to visit and fall prey to Ryan Reynolds' axe.

Why was PETA supposed to buy it?

Too bad they changed the famous attic windows. Why couldn't the subsequent owners just embrace it a little and keep the original windows in? Looks like they faced the backyard so I'm sure that and the address change were enough to mute the curios ghost hunter types. Plus, people annoying and mentally ill enough who want to see it are STILL going to pass by. Beautiful house, I'd buy it in a minute if I could.
