Greenpoint Transmitter Park Closes for Big Redevelopment

Yesterday the Parks Department broke ground on a long-awaited $12 million redevelopment of WNYC Transmitter Park along the East River in Brooklyn. The project, which is expected to take 18 months or so, includes the construction of a pier at the foot of Kent Street, an esplanade for "passive recreation," and 1.6-acres of open space on the waterfront. There will also be a wetland accessible to visitors; and a separate children’s play area featuring a nautical theme.

Sounds suh-weet, but the bad news is that the park is now closed through 2012 while they work on it. Oh well, focus on the future by clicking on the image for an expanded view of the rendering!

  • Bathroom? Yup really well thought out.

What bothers me is that all this city money is following the wave of gentrification. The city isn't putting it there because the good families of Greenpoint deserve it, it's putting the park there for real estate developers.

  • so true.

I had more access to that waterfront 30 years ago, then I do today, I cant imagine what it will be like tomorrow...the abominations that block the waterfron that are down in wburg or over in LIC will eventually come to GPT.

The generations of people who lived there, the community, they have no say whatsoever. I guess thats how it goes in a city where 'cash rules everything'.

Aren't we in a fiscal crisis? Where does all this money come from? Oh silly question, it comes from us.

But do I love park developments so I'm not against this, just wondering how how many essential services we lost to get this project funded.

Yeah! The city should spend none of its economic development funds until the economy just magically heals itself and develops on its own! Then, maybe we'll no longer need "economic development", and can finally safely spend the money allocated for that purpose.

Ever hear of wall street? Mind explaining it? Didn't think so. If you believe in the stock market, then you got to believe in magic.

  • oh come, they put the sewage plant there, the waste transfer stations, oil depots (that leak), the last 3 piers collapsed into the river (some with people on them) , the g train (nuff said)...greenpoint deserves this park and about 100 others.

when I'm POTUS I'm going to re-zone the entire area so that its a national park and wait until a forest of trees (or weeds) take over the entire area.
