NYPD's National Night Out Tonight

2010_07_nypdnightout.jpg Tonight, many NYPD precincts are participating in National Night Out, which gives an opportunity for the police and communities to meet and work together on fighting crime. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, the NYPD says its "precincts organize anti-crime rallies with the participation of local business and civic organizations." Also: "Various Police Department units present displays, and other City, State and Federal agencies also take part." You can see which precincts near you are participating here—we bet Park Slope's 78th Prencinct turnout will be big, after this weekend's fatal beating by mob.

It's too bad most cops stopped being part of the community they work in decades ago. We are lucky if they decide to live in the same time zone we do.

It's good that we have community advocates like the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) to make up for this fact.

But anyway, I don't think it's a "too bad" situation. I would be terrified if I was a cop that lived in some neighborhood where I had just busted a big drug dealer. Murder city right there. And even worse, what about cops coercing local businesses in favor of others re: protection, etc? We all know how much you Gothamist-ers hate corruption!

The NYPD needs to promote the CPR thing year-round.
