Last Night's Action: Double Downer

AJ Burnett looks on as Yunel Escobar runs home on Jose Bautista's fifth inning, two-run double (AP)
  • Toronto 8 Yankees 6: Another AJ Burnett implosion sank the Yanks. AJ had pitched very well through four innings, but he went completely off the rails in the fifth. After surrendering a double and a homer to make it 3-2 Toronto, Burnett allowed a walk, double, fielder’s choice, double, double, strike out, wild pitch, double, before being lifted for Sergio Mitre. The Yankees made things interesting, bringing the tying run to the plate in the 8th, but they couldn’t overcome the hole Burnett had created. Tampa won, so it’s all tied up at the top of the AL East.

  • Atlanta 4 Mets 1: Johan Santana had one rocky inning—the first—but it cost the Mets the game. Santana almost escaped the first after allowing only one run, but Rick Ankiel hit a two-out single to give Atlanta a 3-0 lead. Santana rebounded and struck out 11 over seven innings, but the Mets could not string together a rally. Carlos Beltran had the lone RBI for New York.

The Wilpons should do what the Correleones did. Move their business to Las Vegas.

The Mets embarrassed themselves in front of some of their all-time greats on Sunday and continue the slide towards oblivion. The fact remains which I believe to be irrefutable, that the problem with the Mets is Jeff Wilpon. At least Dolan the Dunderhead has the excuse that he got taken by the likes of Isaiah Thomas and put his trust in the man's empty suit. Jeff Wilpon is the most dangerous of individuals, a person that seemingly has no intellectual prowess yet considers himself a genius. An example of his genius: When Ike Davis was drafted and brought to Brooklyn, he had a grand total of zero home runs. I don't remember if it was the Post or News that ran a little blurb about the fact that "someone" in the front office had gone ballistic at that point and started screaming at the scouting staff about the fact that Davis was a bad draft pick. Knowing what I know about his imperiousness, it's not hard to deduce that the front office person hinted at was Jeff Wilpon. How'd that draft pick work out, Jeffy?

I'm sorry there isn't a way that one can fire an owner. At this point, my only hope as a lifelong Mets fan is that the Madoff business is true and that the Wilpons took enough of a hit that they are in dire straights and will be forced to either sell the team or at least part of it. My hope would be that a new partner would come in and stipulate that the boy genius be kept out of all decision making. The Yankees had the brains to warehouse Hank Steinbrenner in favor of his less volatile brother, Hal. I would hope that Fred would wake up and realize that the fact that Jeffy is most definitely not ready for prime time.

As long as they make money, they don't care if the team wins. A new stadium, food courts, all bring in the dough. There isn't much incentive to put out a winner-The Yankees will continue to win, while the Mets will continue to act like a quadriplegic step brother. They have a team laden with bloated contracts–Jason Bay, Luis Castillo, Santana, Beltran, Reyes, Perez, and FRod who play with zero passion. Minaya and Manuel are two clueless peas in a pod.
