Man Shot Twice On Brooklyn Heights Street

A man was shot twice in the back outside of his Clark Street apartment in Brooklyn Heights last evening. According to the Daily News, "A 28-year-old man with a troubled past was...ambushed... just after 7 p.m."

A witness told Brooklyn Heights Blog, "I heard the shots and I looked over and I saw this young kid with a gun, and shoot it again, and then ran off," and others said there were two men (one with a backpack) and "both fled east on Clark St., where one jumped in to a red SUV." The News says the gunman was described as "a heavyset man in his 20s - was wearing jeans and a dark T-shirt."

Other neighbors tried to help the man while one was in shock, telling BHB, "I’m shaking. I have to admit that until I actually saw the blood, I was maybe a little…not believing it was real, but then once I saw it I really started to feel very shaky, and this is totally out of keeping with this building, with this neighborhood, it’s not at all what you would expect here."

Nah, that's NYPD's code to let the residents know that this was just ghetto trash eliminating ghetto trash and not a RANDOM attack. See RANDOM attacks are scary and can happen to anyone, even them, but if the victim had a "troubled past" then that means he probably deserved it and just got what was coming to him. It gives residents a false sense of security and the shift goes from actually solving the crime to keeping trouble makers out of the neighborhood, so they just assign a few more officers for a week or two and it's over. The NYPD loves it because that means they won't have pesky residents demanding an investigation of an unsolved crime.

The neighborhood needs to hire some private security and build gates to protect from hooligans sneaking in.

Don't worry, you'll start to see plenty o' mo' NYPD to calm the scared rich folk.

  • But the NYPD heightened its presence on Staten Island, but a man was still attacked (granted, the NYPD is allegedly leaving at 1am).

To all the recent NYC transplants who don't understand how this works I'll explain it to you. The administration will act as if nothing is happening because in essence as long as the killings are in the outer boroughs and predominately affects poor men, women and children them nothing of importance is happening. Then the killings start inevitably moving into lower and mid Manhattan at which time they start raising their eyebrows and at least acknowledging the problem but still nothing will be done until a tourist is killed in a high profile crime that gets reported outside of the New York Metro area, then it starts affecting tourism and that's when it becomes unacceptable and the real crime fighting starts.

Much of the recent low crime in New York City can be attributed to the tragic death of Brain Watkins, a Utah tourists who was in NYC to attend the US Open ( http://www.queenstribune.com/anniversary2003/brianwatkins.htm ). When news of his death, in front of his family, made the country's headlines that's when the city said enough is enough and began to really crack down on crime. "Public outcry over Mr. Watkins's murder put pressure on Mayor David N. Dinkins to hire more police officers and has driven his administration's fiscal priorities ever since ... Eventually, the Mayor proposed hiring thousands of additional officers to expand community patrols" ( http://www.nytimes.com/1991/12/11/nyregion/4-guilty-of-murder-and-robbery-in-utah-tourist-s-death-in-subway.html?pagewanted=all ). Some where unsatisfied with Dinkins' handling of crime and this led to Mayor Guiliani's election and I guess the rest is history.

So tragically the best we can hope for is that another tourist to be killed and that it makes the country's headline before Bloomberg and Kelly will acknowledge there's actually a problem in NYC.

    'Well-off'?

You have to remember this is NYC. Zoning/neighborhood lines do not follow logic here. It's easy to get swept up in the disneyland fantasy of N. Brooklyn but you're only a few blocks away from other areas.

man, what is going on with the well off areas of Brooklyn?

  • bashmentgirl

Real estate agents and the police would say nothing is going on. They would call this "an isolated incident".

I don't think it's just now happening, I think violent crime has been rising VERY measurably the last few years; it's always been advantageous for the Bloomberg Admin. not to report or talk it up as much. What you're seeing and hearing now is more seepage of what's been happening for a while.

yes, I know crime is everywhere, regardless if you live in a nice area or not.

paying huge sums in rent does not guarantee safety.
