After ripping into Republican House members for failing to vote for the 9/11 health and compensation bill, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) have been getting lots of press, thanks to his Youtube-captured speech (video below). But now many think his loud, passionate display was less about the bill and more about his 2013 mayoral chances. In other words, Weiner could have been acting like...a politician!
Via Politico's Maggie Haberman, Salon's Steve Kornacki notices that an ulterior motive. Kornacki says, "[T] ry not to fall too hard for Weiner. As riveting as they are, his theatrics -- last night and every time he makes noise on the House floor or cable television -- are best understood as part of a shrewd strategy to position Weiner for the 2013 New York mayor's race," and reminds us that Weiner is "a Chuck Schumer protege who absorbed his old boss' appetite for press coverage.":
He's not an especially consequential figure within the House -- his comments about the internal workings of the chamber tend to be more provocative than accurate -- and his theatrics and pronouncements don't really affect legislation. But it doesn't to the media, which can't resist drama on the House floor. And it doesn't matter to Weiner, who has pulled off an enviable feat this past year: Distancing himself from New York City politics while simultaneously improving his chances in the next mayor's race.
Plus there's the NY Post's editorial, which mocks Weiner's outrage, "Anthony Weiner, get thee to a phar macy -- fast" and says City Hall doesn't need those kind of "histrionics" (Okay, fine, the Post was never going to be that much of a Weiner-fan).
And on Friday, Weiner and Rep. Peter King, Republican from Long Island and a co-sponsor of the bill, brought their shouting to Fox News. The real speech we want to see: Weiner discussing the "Ground Zero" mosque.

If Weiner were conservative, he'd be derisively labelled an "angry, white male." Only liberals can be angry and white and male without it being considered a problem.

whether he's liberal or conservative, so what? There really isn't any justification at all for being an "angry, white male."--what's there to be angry about? So no, it really doesn't matter what color he is, or what political bent he has--he's angry that conservatives are stalling pretty much everything they can--theatrics aside, if somebody at my job kept undoing my work, or hiding my stapler, I'd be angry too.

I'm really not sure what you mean by saying that "There really isn't any justification at all for being an "angry, white male."
Yeah, I'm an angry white man, and this is what pisses me off:
-Our Mayor making deals that benefit large developers and the wealthy at the expense of affordable living space.
-Our Mayor destroying the city school system.
-The City Council and State Senate voting themselves raises in the middle of a horrible economy when most are loosing jobs or taking pay cuts and claiming it's an appropriate cost of living increase.
-Rampant corruption throughout every branch of our government, at all levels.
-MTA / TWU screwing the average New Yorker because they need to / can (respectively).
-Escalating levels of brutal crime.
-Our State's inability to pass a budget / manage Tax money.
-Our President signing laws allowing more offshore drilling in the middle of one of the worst spills in history.
-The continued divide between right and left, making it increasingly more difficult to find sensible middle ground.
-Extremists on both sides making each side seem laughable.
-Celebrity news coverage.

Weiner is not liberal.

Whatever your views on the subject, Weiner gave a great performance... I have to say that. Very entertaining!

It actually was rather thrilling, wasn't it? Hah, "The gentleman is correct in sitting down!"--priceless, no matter what your politics.

Representative Anthony Weiner is a real New Yorker willing to speak out and fight for New York. Even our major didn't have the guts to do this. Mr. Weiner did a good thing.
For all those who think Mr Weiner went too far, it's time for you to LEAVE NYC AND GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM. (If you are from NYC, then F-U). If you do not like Mr. Weiner advocating forcefullly for fire fighters and police officers, you don't understand what 911 has meant to so many who sacrificed so much.
Anthony Weiner for major. (Finally)

This stunt was a complete charade, just like that sham "marriage" of his. Trying to butch up his image for the next election.

Maybe, but how is that different from "Mission Accomplished" or "heckuva job, Brownie!"? Politics is about theatrics because substantive stuff requires substantive thought--something the U.S. used to be good at, but not now. Don't believe me? Look at "Jersey Shore"--none of those idiots is even from Jersey! Yet, morons tune in each week, don't they?

I thoroughly enjoyed Weiner's passionate speech and if that was an act then I hope he keeps "acting" that way. There will always be partisanship in politics but the Republicans are really just going against things for political reasons without a thought as to whether the bills will help the people or not, so I'm glad Weiner spoke up.

He should have taken tips from Diane Savino.
You know what happens when you yell? No one hears you.

Rep. McMahon from Staten Island copied Weinder to show he was manning up too.
The whole delegation is filled with hacks, crooks and losers.
Vote them all out.

yep, what the fuck did Weiner rant do??? I don't agree with King at all but he did have a valid point. The democrats could have passed it since they are the majority. So Weiner should shut the fuck up. He is such a tool. Look at the flier he send out to his district.
Fliers he send out at taxpayers expense. Wiener is a total hack. He gave Bloomberg the election. They had an understanding worked out. Why isn't Weiner ranting about what Bloomberg is doing to the middle class in NYC. He doesn't care that is why. His office in Queens is always EMPTY, none of his chief staffs nor he are in that office.

So what if it's part of him raising his own profile - when the rants are correct, I applaud them. In this case, I'm not familiar with the bill he was talking about but applaud his denouncing the fakery in Congress, esp in the Senate. If a congressperson is against something, make them vote no.
So the theory is that the "con" is that he'll be...a good politician to "trick" us into voting for him? HOW CLEVER. He's a mastermind, an evil genius. If he represents his constituency well, they'll totally snowjobed into voting for him-- where his reign of terror will begin! He'll probably have to continue to be a good politician to "fool" us all into re-electing him. Why HOW DEVIOUS.

Im w/ Splicer on this. Its about time a Democrat had the balls to say SIT THE FUCK DOWN, SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LISTEN TO WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY instead of roadblocking everything in the name of 'winning'. The Republicans have milked the horror of 9/11 for 9 years and yet, in the name of thwarting Democrats, they will even block this bill.
Mr. Obama, you need to call the gentleman from New York for some advice.

Good for Weiner. I'm really sick and tired of Democrats standing around Congress letting the GOP screw them at every turn while the only response is "my esteemed colleague" or some such crap. Finally someone gets angry enough to let the other side have it over one of the worst examples of Republican obstructionism and it's not good enough for anyone.
ides_of_march
Republican obstructionism?
They're the opposition party, they're supposed to oppose, duh. Did you get as upset and sanctimonious when the democrats were in the minority and went against the GOP agenda? I didn't think so. If you want a one party state, try Cuba or North Korea.

You're right, but um, they're opposing a lot of legislation they've authored and presented themselves in previous sessions-and not stuff from a thousand years ago either, easy stuff, like that bill extending unemployment, or um...that healthcare bill-which looks suspiciously like stuff repubs were pushing under Bush I.
I think most dems are rather...squeamish to put it kindly, but the repubs are doing their damndest to make democrats look bad (as if they needed any help) by not letting anything go through w/o major BS filibustering--which slows everything down, including economic recovery. I bet after the elections, things start to run a bit smoother on Capitol Hill. Right now, it's @$$f**k the dems, take over the Senate time.
