Post Resurrects "Relaxing Rangel" Pic For Cover!

Post cover from August 8, 2008 on the left, today's Post cover on the right

Nearly two years ago, the NY Post put a photograph of a dozing Rep. Charles Rangel in beach fashion on its cover—the picture was taken while Rangel was relaxing at his vacation villa in the Dominican Republic. Rangel earned rental income on it, but only "sporadically" reported it on his taxes. Now, the once powerful Congressman from Harlem has been hit with 13 House Ethics violations—including ones related to the villa—so it was a perfect opportunity to run the photo again.

The Post also offers a reminder of how it broke many of the stories related to Rangel's violations, as well as stories on how Rangel's seat is "scarred" from other scandal (Adam Clayton Powell) and that some Harlem residents just want Rangel to go. Capital New York, in examining the cover, writes, "Curiously, the Post wants the reader to know just how extensive the inside coverage is, opting to call out in a red snipe: 'SPECIAL REPORT: PAGES 4,5,6,7,8,9.' Not 4-9, but 4,5,6,7,8,9."

Rangel is reportedly hoping that a deal can still be made so he can avoid an embarrassing—for himself and Democrats—trial this fall. He's running for re-election this year, but has quite a few primary challengers.

The NY Post only ever seems to condemn or even notice DC corruption when it's a Democrat. Fuck the Post with a crowbar.

They seem to have photoshopped the picture(s). The 2nd one doesn't have any greenery at the top, and the shadows fall in different locations. But since he's in nearly the exact same position in both, you'd assume these things would not change so drastically, no?

Agree that the pics are different shots, but the shadows appear to be too dissimilar to not be photoshopped in some manner, especially since they seem to be taken from exactly the same vantage point. Unless that large shadow figure on the left side was the shadow of a person walking behind the greenery. Looks like the images were taken within 20 minutes of each other, based on the shadow on the lawnchair near his chest, but there's no way the shadows in the rear could change that much. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's a bit suspect.

I don't defend such a shitty periodical often but I think it's possible. The camera is higher in the second shot and moved to the photog's left (based on angle of feet to body coverage, amount of his right ear we see and the fact that less of the supporting structure on the back of the chair is seen in second pic). Those shadows that jut to our left on the first picture can be seen on the second pic behind the word 'up' and the shadow jutting to our right in the second pic can be seen on the first picture as well and the domed shape of the basic plant body is pretty visible in both. It also appears that the glare on on his greasy face is very similar in both pictures leading me to believe the sun is in the same place. As for the differences, I assume the photog was at least 50 yards away and a shift of a few inches spread over 50 yards can make a big difference. I could be wrong about all this, though. I don't mean to pick fights.

OK...maybe they're not photoshopped. That figure shadowy figure is in both, but the one on the right pic is obscured by the lettering.

Sorry. Disregard my rambling reply. :)

  • just cropped it in tighter because the foliage wasn't necessary for this story. the previous story was about his "tropical villa".

His mouth looks open in one and not the other. And the way the open part of his shirt is lying is different in the two pictures. Photog must have snapped a few.
