Flushing Avenue Bike Lane Almost In, With JERSEY BARRIERS

The bike ride along the East River between north and south Brooklyn just got a lot less treacherous. Having installed separated bike paths almost all the way from Greenpoint to downtown Brooklyn, the DOT has finally turned its attention to the last unfriendly piece of the puzzle: Flushing Avenue along the Brooklyn Navy Yards. What was formerly the only hairy section of an otherwise pleasant bike route is getting some big improvements this week, with bike lanes stretching all the way from Williamsburg Street West to Navy Street.

As an added safety bonus, the DOT has also installed Jersey barriers between Washington and Kent, giving cyclists additional protection, at least until some loaded driver mistakes it for a drunken occupancy vehicle lane.

Here in Bogota, Colombia, they put the bike ways on the sidewalks - and this city has crowded sidewalks. So, you have to dodge pedestrians, delivery vehicles, etc etc. Today, I almost hit a woman carrying a baby who wandered across the bike way, which is just a line painted on a sidewalk, anyway.

they need to get rid of the median so there's more room for the bike lane.

I drove past one of these this weekend, and was shocked to see a biker riding outside of the barrier (on the street). Way to make it more precarious for everyone.

Jersey Barriers? Where are you from? They're dividers.

Uh -- where are you from??? They are called Jersey barriers -- have been for decades:

I've only heard people call them that in other parts of the country. I've heard them called dividers, and sometimes medians. Especially on traffic updates. I think if they said "a tractor trailer crashed into the Jersey Barrier" on 1010 WINS, I'd drive off the road.

I've always called them "barriers"...a "median" is the area between two roads. But I've always known that "Jersey Barrier" is another term for them...though I've never actually heard anyone use that phrase.
