Sean Bell's Family, Friends Discuss Police Settlement

A lawyer said that the city's $3.25 million payment to settle the wrongful death lawsuit of Sean Bell, who was killed in a hail of 50 bullets hours before his wedding, was the largest payout for a police shooting. According to Newsday, "The Bell settlement in the Brooklyn federal court case topped recoveries by Amadou Diallo ($3 million), Ousmane Zongo ($3 million) and Patrick Dorismond ($2 million), three other men who died in notorious police shooting cases in the city."

Bell was killed while two friends were injured in a chaotic confrontation with police after leaving a Queens strip club in November 2006: Undercover police officers thought the men were armed while Bell and his friends didn't realize that the plainclothes police officers with their guns drawn were cops, so Bell drove into them, trying to escape.

Lawyer Sanford Rubenstein noted that while Bell's work history didn't provide high potential for lost wages, "his damages were elevated because he had two young daughters entitled to compensation for losing their father." Additionally, Newsday explains, "Survivors of police abuse - such as Abner Louima, who got $7.125 million - frequently receive more than death cases because they are able to collect for post-incident pain and suffering." However, Bell's fiancee Nicole Paultre Bell said that while the settlement was financially "reasonable...Nothing can replace their father."

The NY Times, who also pointed out a study that showed wrongful death suits are settled for an average of "about twice as much as for herniated disc cases and a third as much as for cases involving brain damage," spoke to a former lawyer in the city's Law Department, who said, "The city always tries to get away with paying as little as possible, and in the end it always caves in and settles, because it fears what the jury might award in such a high-profile matter. Make it go away: that has been the policy of this administration."

Joseph Guzman, who was shot 17 times, received $3 million but said, "Nobody wins in this."

So he was worth 3.25 mill.

Great for the family for putting a price tag on their dead 'loved one'.

Gee, if they weren't cops, what would they have gotten?

    This is BS.

What was his reported income on his last tax return?

That's what should be used to decide these BS lawsuits.

for john L and all of those whom think this was an accidental shooting. IT WAS NOT! of course it was intentional. bell and his 'boys' are and were dangerous, gun carrying perps, incapable of adhering to societal norms. they were, in fact, drunk, and had expressed that they were going to imminently obtain a firearm, with the intent to do harm to another human being. then, when confronted by police officers, bell decided to try to kill the officers by running them down with a motor vehicle, essentially a one ton bullet.

if you seriously think that you would react differently, given the same circumstances, and possessing the same knowledge that the officers did, you are either lying to yourself, and to others, or you are a coward. because to not react in a quick, decisive manner, when your friends, and strangers, are in imminent mortal danger, by meeting deadly force with deadly force, is cowardly, and i am glad you are not a person upon which my life depends.

if the officers had not taken action, and bell and his ilk were successful in returning to the club with the firearm, and had then shot, and likely killed, one or more persons, would you be condemning these armed, career criminals as vehemently as you are the officers whom would, and do, put their lives on the line, every day, to protect you?

This is a good example of what happens when racist cops get in the way of "people of color" expressing their cultural diversity. Those cops had no business preventing Sean and his little friends from getting drunk and high and maybe doing a little raping to celebrate Sean's next day nuptials.

Down with racist cops. Hooray for cultural diversity!

  • John L

    "maybe doing a little raping"

What would make you say or think something like that?

You're really a inorant, sick, racist person.

Sean Bell and his friends were celebrating the fact that he was getting married. This was his bachelor party and they did the things most Americans (white & black) do at their bachelor parties. Nothing remarkable or so out of the ordinary happened that night until the cops shot them 50 times.

  • Petey

So most americans get drunk less than 24 hours prior to their wedding at a seedy strip club, then threaten the bouncer that they will shoot him after the "stripper" (prostitute) complains about having to "do" all of them, then say to get the gun from the car?

  • John L

You're so lame. I guess you've never gone to a Bachelor party huh? Well let me try to explain it to you.

    This is directly from Wikipedia:

A bachelor party (USA, Canada and South Africa), also known as a stag party, stag night or stag do (United States, Canada, UK, Ireland and New Zealand), a bull's party (South Africa), and a buck's party or buck's night (Australia) is a party held for a bachelor shortly before he enters marriage, to make the most of his final opportunity to engage in activities a new partner might not approve of, or merely to spend time with his male friends (who are often in his wedding party afterwards). Bachelor Parties are usually planned by the best man or occasionally with the assistance of a bachelor party planning company.

    Events

A bachelor party may involve activities beyond the usual party and social gathering ingredients (often drinking alcohol and gambling), such as going to a strip club or hiring a stripper, and in some traditions more hazing-like tests and pranks at the future groom's expense, which shows the whole thing is also a rite of passage from bachelorhood (associated with an adolescent lifestyle, often in the common past of most participants, e.g. in their student years) to "more responsible" marital life.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_party

And yes when people get drunk they sometimes do or say crazy things (any bouncer, bartender, or club owner can attest to that) but they don't deserve to get shot 50 times for it.

That's the part people don't get, there was no reason to shoot that many times. Accidents happen I can understand that and it shouldn't be but what can we do but 50 fucking shots is no accident.

Criminals don't even shoot victims 50 times. Show me one incident where a criminal or group of criminals shot a victim 50 times here in NYC.

If there was a story on here about the cops shooting a dog 50 times there would be a fucking uproar but human beings get shot 50 times and its ok?

They should've received $50 million, a million for each fucking bullet.

  • Petey

THEY SAID THEY WERE GOING TO THEIR CAR TO GET A GUN TO SHOOT THE BOUNCER. Thats not like any bachelor party, or any other event I've EVER been to. My friends don't threaten to go shoot someone.

  • D.Lane

Yes, i agree wholeheartedly. what was I thinking saying "a little raping". I was obvioulsy stereotyping what an unemployed, dead-beat dad, drug dealer would be doing with his friends at 3am, at a drug and prostitute infested strip club on his wedding eve.

My apologies if I intruded on your moral high ground.

Down with racist cops. Hooray for dead-beat-dad drug dealers expressing their cultural diversity! And kudos to John L for being such a defender of colored people. Sorry I meant "people of color".

  • John L

All you racists are really something else.

May GOD bless you and touch your hearts.

  • jpeditor

At least you kept your BS down to a few words (ONLY MORONS PLAY RACE CARDS).

  • jpeditor

    Thats a lot of lapdances...

  • Gotham Extremist

You are right that there is no winner, but if you had hired a Jew for lawyer, you would of gotten 30 mil a piece, then you would be the WINNER!

  • nicemarmot

    "Nobody wins in this."

Yeah, especially not the taxpayers who had nothing to do with it, yet wind up footing the bills on all sides. What a waste, all around. A waste of life, a waste of time, a waste of money.

  • OuHe

Exactly! why the hell should we pay for this crap. Take this shit out of the PBA, phucktards!

  • bashmentgirl

    I agree.

  • virjin

lemme guess, 22" rims for the escalade, then get her hair "did", buy some gold, and blow the rest on weed/coke. what a waste.

  • bashmentgirl

I can see why you're still a "virgin".

  • virjin

and i bet your a fat ugly whore. there, we are even. wanna go on a date now?

  • bashmentgirl

Try not to be so sensitive. You should expect at least one comment to include the word "virgin". Well, I can tell that I've hurt your feelings and for that I am truly sorry.

P.S. never ask me to go on a date with you again.

  • Gotham Extremist

depends on whos pitchin & whos catchin, na mean?

  • kevd

    Lemme guess, obnoxious racist jackass?

  • virjin

nope, just calling it like i see it. open your eyes, jackass.

  • Jen S

Perfect logic. Maybe you missed this part:

"What's important is my fight doesn't end now," she said, vowing to continue to push state legislatures to pass a package of laws to reform the Civilian Complaint Review Board, require drug testing when cops fire their guns and ban arrest quotas.
