13-Year-Old Calls 911 To Report Drunk Driving Mom

072710hicksdwi.jpg A panicked 13-year-old girl made repeated calls to 911 Sunday night to report her mother for drunk driving on I-84. The girl called for help from the confines of Jamie Hicks's green Buick, telling the dispatcher that her mom was drunk and was swerving into other lanes. WCBS reports, "The dispatcher heard lots of screaming and yelling and said the girl claimed her mom was hitting her, and there were multiple hang-ups." But you've got to expect that when you narc out mommy for being boozy behind the wheel.

Police were able to pinpoint the cell phone's location and Hicks was pulled over on I-84 in Brewster, near Connecticut. Police say Hicks's blood-alcohol level was 0.18, more than twice the legal limit. For context, WCBS turned to the Greek chorus in her hometown of Islip. Neighbor Jason Weiss says, "That's not right. You should take care of her. Put her in jail now. That's no good." Another neighbor was surprised, telling the news station, "She seems like a nice lady. I've never seen anything odd, never seen any kind of drinking situations."

Hicks will be charged under Leandra's Law, which makes it a felony to drive drunk with a passenger 15 years old or under. (Two of Hicks's daughters were in the Buick.) And this isn't the first time a kid has called 911 to report a drunk driving parent; last summer another 13-year-old girl called 911 to report that her drunk mom was driving in the oncoming lane. When Susan Rogge of Putnam County was pulled over, she had a blood alcohol level of 0.22, almost three times the legal limit.

i'm hoping all those rat comments are jokes because what this girl did took balls and it was the right thing to do. who knows how many people she saved that day by calling this in.

Everyone is so quick to call this kid a rat fink but just 1yr ago some drunk Mom (Diane Schuyler) drove the wrong way on the Taconic and killed a bunch of people. If those girls were able to call and 'rat' her out maybe it wouldn't have happened.

They are being sarcastic, I am almost 100% sure.

How are you going to sell your mom out like that? If I was the kid, I would've grabbed the wheel and drive my drunk mom home.

  • henryhamilton

It's doubtful that the phone call, and the actions resulting from it achieved anything meaningful. Ultimately, the kid will regret it more than the parent.

"narc out mommy for being boozy behind the wheel"

Do you think you're being cute and funny writing that? You're not. Nothing's funny about this unfortunate situation.

If your mother stabs a priest in front of you, you don't call the cops. You help her bury the body. That's an unspoken rule you should know by age 5.

Good for her.. she possibly saved some lives that day. And I hope she has some other family member with decent sense to protect her from any aftermath coming from her stupid alcoholic mother.

When I first heard of Leandra's Law I thought it was a good law in theory but would have limited application in practice because I never imagined that this was such a big problem. I thought parents would know better than to jeopardize their children like that but apparently I was wrong. Some of these kids really don't stand a chance with parents like these. May God bless and protect these children.

Another family destroyed by alcoholism. They keep overtaxing cigarettes to deter people from smoking I'd like to see them do the same with hard liquor. Make alcohol so expensive that it'll cost about $200 to get drunk and let's see how many people will still be able to drink irresponsibility. Forget second hand smoke look at the real effects of "second hand drinking".

Way to sell out your mom, traitor.

Heh. Note to drunk driving parents: you probably don't want to give your kid a cell phone. Once they're old enough to realize what you're doing, they probably won't appreciate you risking their lives like that.

Good for the kid! It takes balls.
