Three Dead, Others Wounded in Day of Brooklyn Violence

Yesterday saw multiple shootings in Brooklyn, ending in three deaths and other injuries. 15-year-old Tyquan Jamison was one of the victims, shot at 3:30 a.m. on Monday on Glenmore Avenue with a bullet cops say was intended for his friend. Jamison was a junior varsity basketball player, and his coach told the Daily News, "I always tell the kids, you have to be a student-athlete. Being out at 3:30 in the morning, you're not being an athlete."

Later that afternoon, two men were hospitalized after a police shootout at Hegeman Avenue and Osborn Street. Two officers were reportedly heading to a meeting at the 69th Precinct when they came upon two men chasing two others and shooting at each other. Police say one of the men, Shermaine Thompson, turned and fired at the officers, who then began to return fire as they chased him down an alley. Thompson got away, but police found him again when he was taken to Brookdale Hospital after returning home with a gunshot wound in his leg. The Daily News says, "It was not clear if the cops hit Thompson."

Police arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the shootout, and a third man was treated for a gunshot wound after showing up at Brookdale Hospital with part of his finger shot off. There were two other murders in other parts of Brooklyn on Monday. Samuel Boucher was killed by a thief who stole his BlackBerry in East Flatbush, and Christopher Atkins was killed during an argument in Crown Heights. Cops believe Atkins' death was gang-related, but have yet to make an arrest for any of the three murders.

Just last month, a 9-year-old was shot in Brownsville over a stolen bike. Locals say the neighborhood could benefit from more police presence. One told NY1, "It's terrible. We need more security in the neighborhood. We do. They don't have to be here 24 hours, but we do need the presence of them more often."

wow. as a friend of sam boucher who got home an hour ago from his memorial service, i gotta say its making me kinda sick to read some of this petty back and forth between some people.

i guess everything seems petty at the moment tho...

People keep talking about "Stop & Frisks" yet none of these people were saved. I'm all for fighting crime, show me a tactic that works and I'll support it, but after looking at all the "Stop & Frisk" data and the level of crime how can anyone still support it? Why do people continue to think that it deters crime? Because Bloomberg or Ray Kelly said so? Look at the numbers! It doesn't work! Maybe it worked for a little while in the beginning but obviously by now criminals have figured out how to get around it. Ray Kelly and the NYPD don't have clue of what to do and that's why they persist on using the same ineffective tactic over and over again. The NYPD needs new leadership with new ideas and tactics on how to stop crime, not stop innocent people and frisk them, but ideas and tactics that actually STOP CRIME.

24 hour community policing is still the most basic and effective crime fighting measure and it saves money too. Take the majority of these cops out of these air conditioned gas guzzling squad cars and let them walk the beat and get to know the residents. They'll quickly find out who the good guys are and who the bad guys are, who the gang members are and who's just walking home from school, who's coming home from work and who's up to no good. Let the officers build a relationship with the community and pretty soon they'll start helping the officers catch the criminals.

People on here seem to be under the impression that at designated times vans full of cops stop a bunch of random people for the sake of it and then proceed to drive away for the night. That is not how it works. The majority of these "stop and frisks" are conducted by street posts, who stand outside for hours at a time on corners that are plagued by crime. In fact, they are the closest thing the NYPD has to beat cops.

Also, people continue to cite the fact that 90 percent of those stopped are not arrested, but this does not mean that only 10 percent of them are guilty of an offence. When one considers summonses and desk appearance tickets given, the percentages are much different.

Why is this kid playing basketball in that neighborhood at 3am?

Why did both parents allow this?

Ironic, considering that this is the same precinct that was the subject of that NY Times "stop and frisk' article last week.

Key words, "police presence", but i didn't read anywhere in your post where that person said "we need more innocent people to be stopped and frisked so it can somehow help police. catch the real criminals".

  • ocm123

In general, the more foot posts in an area, the more people will be stopped.

  • The problem is the communities refuse to take any responsibility for this behavior—in fact as much as they say they want it cleaned up, they promote it.

  • kazubes

Yea those communities want more police presence but what is the point, they won't actually step up to help solve the root of the criminal problem. As soon as that uniformed body leaves his post for the night the shit will start right back up

  • Mr. Know-It-All

...which is exactly what happens every night on Franklin Ave. in Crown Heights. The street is crawling with cops all day, then from midnight until 4:00 a.m. there are kids hanging out and chasing each other up and down the street. Apparently no one in this neighborhood has any occupation that requires them to get out of bed before noon. Kids as young as 14 and 15 are out in the street until nearly dawn and not a parent in sight. Then someone gets shot and it's the fault of the police.

Crazy as it seems I always felt minors should have a citywide curfew in NYC. There's absolutely no reason for a minor to be out without a parental figure until 3 or 4am. I know a lot of people disagree but think of the lives saved and the crime reduction if this was imposed.

You can have all the security you want but if people refuse to act correctly, this is the result.

The Blackberry getting stolen story is a little light on details.

  • Jared

So many questions, so little time. Why was a 15-year old child playing basketball at 3:30am? And why is it the communities that cry out for more "police presence" are the same ones decrying the stop-and-frisk behavior of those same officers? As a black man, I understand the concern of unlawful searches, but come on. If crime levels correspond to temperature, I fear what August will bring.

  • areyoutuffenuff

And why is it the communities that cry out for more "police presence" are the same ones decrying the stop-and-frisk behavior of those same officers?

Actually, if you go back to the NY Times articles that were floating around on the issue last week, close to 90% of residents favored the police presence and stop-and-frisks. It's the bleeding hearts and the ACLU intervening and telling these residents what's "best" for their neighborhoods.

  • napalm

"And why is it the communities that cry out for more "police presence" are the same ones decrying the stop-and-frisk behavior of those same officers?"

So in order for the cops to protect the innocent people, they must first incriminate, humiliate and stop them every other day? Really? You're obviously not what you say you are, perhaps you don't even live in NYC, but the innocent people should never have to feel like "they" are the criminals and have the NYPD tell them its the only way. Besides, the numbers don't lie, are you aware of the stats and percentages of these stop and frisks?

It even worst for someone like you, than it is for those innocent people being treated like suspects, they're subjected to the truth, you're subjected to the media.. Brainwashed?

  • Loulou

I really hate people like you. Nothing but white naive cop haters. The only "brainwash" shit is you because its just obvious your predujuice about cops. Its funny how I look back and its just alot of white people trying to handcuff the cops and making it harder for them to do their jobs talking shit about racism this and racism that while they try to make better of some "minority" neighborhoods. Have you fucks ever have to worry about carryin on you because you knew certain sets were beefing and u might have the wrong shirt on that day? You ever have to worry about having the bigger knife? You ever worry about getting jumped because someone thinks your posted up on their block?Your a fucking hyprocrite in the other post you were talking shit because I was dominican. "Besides, the numbers don't lie, are you aware of the stats and percentages of these stop and frisks? " Yeah because alot of asians and whites are gonna get stopped in brownsville. You cant be that naive and ignorant. I have a feeling you aint no shit about what goes on in any "hood".My boy died last year across the street from white banner diaz grocery over there about 2 blocks off of Stanley st where that kid got shot. He went to go get a dutch and a bagel it was like 9pm at night and I would never forget that day. He never got into a fight with anyone and was always the mommas boy always making sure his little sisters were taken care of first and helping her out. He got robbed for a psp and his phone. That place is bad and i see its getting worse. I bet they still got the bloods and off set crips set chillin down by those houses having rumbles all the time.

  • napalm

Lmao!!!.. Ok now shut up and listen bitch. As i mentioned to your confused ass on the other thread, I'm from West Harlem where the majority of the residents are Dominican and i banged a whole lotta Dominican broads in my days. But you must be one of these new generation skinny jeans and tight v-neck shirt guys, but in the early 90's, there was an issue involving the community and the NYPD, no different from what you still see today. Though you were in diapers at this time, but there was something called the Washington heights riots because of a police officer killing an innocent man (Dominican). Me being Italian and growing up in this area, I've seen my fare share of police wrong doings. So me naive? No mothafuka, you're the naive pisshead. Maybe its "you" who is self hating if you don't even know that its happening to your people too, yes Dominicans are stopped and frisked all the time without provocation.

PS. You did a great job on my car the last time. But you gotta remember to clean the tires before you apply the armoral.

  • Loulou

I don't care if your from motherfucking santiago your still a naive white prejudice cop hating piece of shit. I don't like cops but shit your just some mess. Talking shit about how cops harass in "minority neighborhoods" fuck out of here with that shit yet make fun of me for being dominican. Get your cause right you sound like another confused yuppie. Your prob not even 30 yet telling me I was in diapers. Yeah im self hating..lol right because Im calling you out for being a self hating bitch. LOL look at all your history posts you do nothing but hate on your skin and talk shit about pd. And btw im not gonna hate on some cops because "dominicans are stopped and frisked all the time without provocation". Where would dominicans be mostly stopped..oh I see yeah where there's a majority of them...because that's how shit works.I almost got stopped a week ago..had about a quarter of an ounce and a 9 inch knife on me. If i would have been arrested it would have been my fault for carrying that stuff on me. No i don't go blaming the cops for doing their job because I aint a naive confused big ball of shit like yourself.

  • wingedearth

Why did the cops shoot that thug in the leg rather than the head? Some some wishy washy liberal jury in Brooklyn will get the thug released back into society and the problem will persist. If the cops go for more head shots, they'll make Brooklyn a better place.
