Cop Charged for Hitting Bike Rider, Leaving Scene

072010sands.jpg Last month that two NYPD officers were suspended without pay after failing to report hitting a bike rider Monday while driving on the wrong side of Jay Street by Sands. According to a report in the Daily News, after knocking the cyclist off his bike with their car, Officer Louis Ramos, a 19-year veteran, and Paris Anderson, a six-year veteran, "helped the victim to the sidewalk and gave him tissues to clean the cuts and abrasions on his face, arms and legs. Then the cops drove off."

The cyclist, 61-year-old Yu Tong Chan, broke his nose and sustained facial cuts after the accidents, and he later reported the incident. Internal Affairs launched an investigation because there was no paperwork documenting the accident; as one police source put it, "For something like this there has to be documentation, even if there are minor injuries." Today 1010 WINS reports that Ramos surrendered to authorities to be charged with reckless driving, reckless assault and leaving the scene of an accident. The whole world is upside down!

Of course charges were brought against the officers, a video surfaced of the incident. Otherwise, it would have been swept under the rug.

  • JacqueMehoff

did Halloran follow them to find out what type of emergency they were going to?

  • Angelheaded Hipster

Lots of experts in here on police procedure --- really impressive

  • YouWillLearn

You used to have to EARN your right to bike here. Fuck this pussy shit. Take the hit and learn from it.

  • bashmentgirl

Initially, the cyclist may have asked the officers not to report the incident because of his immigration status. Even so, the cops should have reported crash. On the other hand, the cops could be heartless basterds(purposely misspelled) who hit a man and left him on a sidewalk. Either way, the officers should be fired.

They just drove off without raping him??

Internal affairs has to charge some cops sometimes just to make their office relevant but they know that by the time this case gets called the 19 year veteran will have enough years to retire with his full pension and the other officer will undoubtedly be found not guilty, as usual. The bike rider will get a $50,000 settlement from the taxpayers for his trouble.

  • Ph

Full pension retirement is either 30 or 40 years on the job. I highly doubt it will take that long to resolve this.

  • Petey

    Wrong. 20 years.

    F**kers

  • Potty Boy

    Fockers?

  • yeah yeah, so what. nothing will happen to him, he'll go to court, he'll be found not guilty, and people will lose even more respect for our bullshit judicial system.

  • justthinkin

I wonder if this will show on on Compstat.

The trouble with harshly punishing abuses by people like these police officers is that it encourages harsher cover-ups. If the officers stood to lose their pensions, the guy might've wound up disappeared instead of abandoned on the sidewalk.

    and

How much do you want to bet that these copsthought it would all go away because the guy was an immigrant, possibly illegal?

  • Ph

No, that's not it at all. If they had stayed and done the paper work, it probably would have been a case of really bad luck, they pay for the guys injuries and pain and suffering AND they get to keep their pensions but instead, they're fucked because they probably thought nothing would come of it.

I guarantee if they did the paperwork it wouldn't have even made the police blotter.

  • Petey

What happens if he says i'm fine, wants to leave, and doesn't want to give his ID to the police? Do they not let him leave?

  • John L

They are still required to fill out an incident report because you never know if that person will later suffer internal bleeding and maybe even die.

  • Petey

What will they refer to the bicyclist as?

  • John L

    You're kidding right?

    A UFO

An unidentified fucking object on a bicycle

  • bleeckerite

    Oink oink, officers.
