Just What "Ground Zero" Mosque Fight Needs: Sarah Palin

071910palin.jpg
This mosque is a knife in Sarah Palin's heart, dontchaknow?
Worried that the debate over the proposed mosque/community center two blocks from the World Trade Center site isn't hysterical enough? Here comes Sarah Palin to stick her oar in. Yesterday the former beauty pageant contestant weighed in on the mosque via Twitter, writing, "Ground Zero Mosque supporters: doesn’t it stab you in the heart, as it does ours throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate." But that was just Palin's first draft...

When East Coast liberal elites snickered that "refudiate" is not a word, Palin deleted her tweet, changing it to, "Peaceful New Yorkers, pls refute the Ground Zero mosque plan if you believe catastrophic pain caused @ Twin Towers site is too raw, too real." Of course, as Little Green Footballs points out, while "refute" has the virtue of being an actual word, it doesn't really make sense here. (Repudiate works, but that puts her over the Twitter character limit!) And although she deleted her previous neologism, Palin has used "refudiate" before, and yesterday she defended herself in a Twitter post that reads, "'Refudiate,' 'misunderestimate,' 'wee-wee'd up.' English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!"

But back to the topic at hand, Palin also tweeted, "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing." In response, Bloomberg aide Andrea Batista Schlesinger counter-tweeted, "@SarahPalinUSA whose hearts? Racist hearts?" and, later, "@SarahPalinUSA mind your business." Politico reports that these posts were later deleted, but Schlesinger subsequently wrote:

Deleted post bc I regretted curt response. But fact is, I believe this city belongs to everyone - and no one more than another... Unlike @SarahPalinUSA, I was born here grew up here. Was showing off to a visitor today - look at how beautiful and diverse my city is... I felt pain of 9/11, the trauma. I got through it by believing in my city. Not through fear and hate.

And it's not just NYC that's got mosque mania; Muslims in the Temecula Valley outside Los Angeles have been raising money to build a mosque for years on a vacant lot, but now they're facing opposition from Islamophobic locals. The pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, which sits across from the site of the mosque, tells the L.A. Times the two religions "mix like oil and water" and predicts a "confrontational atmosphere" if the mosque is built. "The Islamic foothold is not strong here, and we really don't want to see their influence spread," says Pastor Bill Rench. "There is a concern with all the rumors you hear about sleeper cells and all that. Are we supposed to be complacent just because these people say it's a religion of peace? Many others have said the same thing." Bill's right, many other religions have said the same thing!

Update: Finally, Bloomberg tells reporters what he thinks of Palin's mosque views and his staffer's Tweeting.

    Man, fuck religion.

Religious dogma is responsible for 95% of the evil in this world. The worst atrocities are committed by people who claim they are performing "God's work".

The crusades, the inquisition, the Gaza war, 911, the intifada, the attacks in Mumbai, Oklahoma City, etc.

Religious tolerance means being intolerant of violent dogma.

  • Wayne

As a Canadian I find Sarah Palin too funny and cannot understand how anyone in the US takes her seriously.

I think Sarah Palin and and former president Bush should play Scrabble they could write the New English-Republican dictionary.

With words like WMDees and Refudiate, and they could complain how they are Misunderestimated they are by the people. These people ran or want to run the US. Wow!

    Too funny.

Want to have some fun go play scrabble with a Republican make sure you bring a dictionary though. They like to cheat ;)

  • jpeditor

"we could move past islamaphobic ideas "

It's not a "phobia" when islam IS REALLY TRYING TO KILL US.

  • jmak

this is great, I haven't heard a really stupid Palin comment in a month or so..

and Mrs. Palin, there would actually be no better sign of "healing" than the construction of this mosque, as it would signify we could move past islamaphobic ideas and into recognition of islam as an equal religion and life choice- in a country FOUNDED ON FREEDOM OF RELIGION!

If Palin and her tea party want to "get back to the Constitution", they should start with the first ammendment.

  • "resigned for the benefit of her constituents"?

O, that's utter bull___t and you know it. She bailed when the going got tough and took a bigger paycheck, nothing more. You just go on and support Ex Gov. Quitter.

"And I DEFECATE on you and the rest of the suckjobs on your knees to building this mosque."?

    Wow, that hurt my feelings!

    So, Interested in a bridge?

The silence from American Muslims is deafening.......and quite telling. Let me summerize the posting here:

    Muslims good- Christians bad.

    Muslims good- Jews bad.

Mindless sheeple who cannot see the forrest through the trees.

there is no war of religions. there is no east vs west war.

    this is all about politics.

heaven forbid people thought about whether our countrys policies in the middle east are WRONG....it might get in the way of the next war...with Iran.

Instead 'interest groups' ecourage politicizing an entire religion. Pretty soon 'muslims' hardly seem human to Americans.

Then when the next war comes people will watch the nightime bombing of Tehran and won't feel a pang of pity.

'So what we bombed their cities, killed a bunch of civilians. we're still the good guys...they were crazy muslims!'

carry on, everythings fine...this has gone on for time immemorial. In the first half of my life, dangerous muslims apparently didnt exist, the threat then to our way of life was communists! Millions died while others made fortunes fighting the commies. Now we have new enemy, but its the same old politics.

If you don't see it, you're not paying attention.

After this, English no longer lives. It has just crawled into a sewer to die alone and in silence. RIP.

Of course, it's corpse will be found again by Sarah Palin, who will then eulogize it by declaring in yet another tweet, "Alas, pour Eunuch. I new him, Fellatio."

I am sick of right-wingers, who attack NYC daily as a pit of evil left-wng liberalism, and then claim 9/11 as theirs. The funny thing is that the WTC was attacked for many of the same reasons that these crazy right-wingers hate NYC for. People like Sarah Palin are closer ideologically to Al Qaeda than any NYC liberal ever will be.

  • snickerdoodle

    -1.

I'm sick of spoiled, braindead, Gothamist slackers attacking middle America and "Red States" , places idiots like you have never visited once because you think it's overrun with the KKK, rotfl. People like you are closer ideologically to the violently close-minded Islamic fascists than to the true ideals of America where diversity lies in ideas, debate and discourse, not in skin color.

  • Tuna Loaf

I've visited both "middle America" and a few of the "Red States." They seem very nice. You're so defensive! I have an objection, though, to a Heartland supremacist like Sarah Palin presuming to tell people in New York how they're supposed to feel about a Lower Manhattan land use development decision. She had a nice view of 9/11 from her Barcalounger. Why are you taking your marching orders from this meddlesome ratbag? Do you have a mind of your own?

  • robingee

Slackers! How retro. Haven't heard that word in ages.

And yes, feel free to assume everyone here is a spoiled slacker since we never leave our oh-so-metropolitan cushy jobs and travel to The Heartland where people REALLY WORK. OF COURSE there are smart people in Middle America and OF COURSE there are tons of dummies in urban areas.

    Like, dur-hey.

You mean middle American isn't full of tea bagging tea baggers that moonlight in the KKK? WHO KNEW???

  • morristhewise

There are less controversial places to build the mosque. If there is a mosque to be built at ground zero it should be led by an Imam reading from a cleansed Koran. Words of violence would be deleted and forbidden to be uttered. The new Koran and mosque will be a factory that converts potential terrorists into peaceful worshipers.

  • snickerdoodle

    Good idea.

  • over the weekend a conterversial video was released of the Israeli PM saying among other things that

‘America is a thing you can move very easily’

thats what this whole mosque fear mongering campagain reminds me of.

making americans be afraid of the 1% of the population that is muslim.

making america which is 7K miles from the middle east think of 'those' people as the enemy.

‘America is a thing you can move very easily’

TV commericals, bus ads, DVDs inserted into paper...these aren't spontaneous americans organizing against Islam. This is a concerted effort by letter head orgnizations to propagandize islam=evil....who is behind these groups? Why would they do this? what do they have to gain?

    Like the PM said

‘America is a thing you can move very easily’

    http://mondoweiss.net/2010/07/america-is-a-thing-you-can-move-very-easily-said-netanyahu.html

  • Manitoba

What did the Israeli PM say?

  • He laid out the truth about the faux 'peace process'. Supremely important but it didnt make the news in the US on even one channel. Here's a summary.

“I know what America is,” Netanyahu replied. “America is a thing you can move very easily, move it in the right direction. They won’t get in their way.” He then called former president Bill Clinton “radically pro-Palestinian,” and went on to belittle the Oslo peace accords as vulnerable to manipulation. Since the accords state that Israel would be allowed to hang on to pre-defined military zones in the West Bank, Netanyahu told his hosts that he could torpedo the accords by defining vast swaths of land as just that.

“They asked me before the election if I’d honor [the Oslo accords],” Netanyahu said. “I said I would, but … I’m going to interpret the accords in such a way that would allow me to put an end to this galloping forward to the ’67 borders. How did we do it? Nobody said what defined military zones were. Defined military zones are security zones; as far as I’m concerned, the entire Jordan Valley is a defined military zone. Go argue.”

Smiling, Netanyahu then recalled how he forced former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher to agree to let Israel alone determine which parts of the West Bank were to be defined as military zones. “They didn’t want to give me that letter,” Netanyahu said, “so I didn’t give them the Hebron agreement [the agreement giving Hebron back to the Palestinians]. I cut the cabinet meeting short and said, ‘I’m not signing.’ Only when the letter came, during that meeting, to me and to Arafat, did I ratify the Hebron agreement. Why is this important? Because from that moment on, I de facto put an end to the Oslo accords.”

  • Manitoba

I still don't get it. Did he make some sort of statement?

  • it was a video that was recorded without him fully knowing it.

He told the people that the Oslo peace process was dead, because he had america agree that he could but military outposts on the land that would be Palestenian land. And ensuring them that since Israel would define where and how big the outposts would be, there never be viable two state solution that the Palestenians would accept.

the video was recorded 10 years ago and shows that despite all the empty talk about a 'peace process' the israeli govt. then and now have no intention of withdrawing to their legal borders. the endless peace process is just buying time.

A lot of people knew this to be true, but to have the PM of Israel saying, while our govt. is still pretending its going to happen is even more proof.

its shame the MSM will pretend Netenyahu didnt say it. No reporter will ask Obama or anyone else about it. The peace plan charade will go on and on while Israel is annexes more land outside their border.

    http://maxblumenthal.com/2010/07/the-settlement-freeze-that-never-was-and-never-will-be/

  • Manitoba

So, was there some sort of comment made by the PM?

  • maybe thats why it wont be on the news.

I cant summarize it any better. You can read about it on mondoweiss.net

  • Manitoba

I don't have to read all of this; can you summarize for me please? Did the Israeli PM say something controversial?

  • yes. he says he has no intention of making peace, that he's only pretending.

  • Manitoba

So, the PM is proposing a two-state solution? Sweet!

  • Sapphire_407

I have an Iraqi-British friend who lives in the UK where they have arabic tv channels. He told me the muslims in the middle east are gloating over this mosque. He said on one show there were people calling in wanting to donate money. Not all muslims want Islam to take over the world, but many do and this is a big score for them. You New Yorkers need to stop this mosque. Many Americans are counting on you.

  • robingee

And remember when there were rumors of Muslims clapping and dancing and cheering after the towers came down, here in America? I heard so many people going. "No, it's true they saw it on TV and were cheering!" Because every Muslim person on the street and in Dunkin Donuts in Passaic New Jersey knew who did it and supported it. Don't believe things people tell you... The Blair Witch isn't real.

a US equivalent might be that crazy church group that protests at peoples funeral. If someone attacked them, they'd be wrong and ought to punished, but just because there they were victims of violence we wouldn't hold then hold that group up as honerably fighting for free speech.

Sarah Palin does the Republicans no favors. She's a hack in the Fox News mold with no real ideology, like most of the Republicans who hold or pursue public office today.

Still, New Yorkers who celebrate the opening of a mosque near Ground Zero are like parents who celebrate the opening a Catholic Church near their children's elementary school. The self-congratulating multiculturalism that would turn a blind eye to this sickening juxtaposition earns us no respect, only disgust.

Top ten reasons why sharia (Islamic law) is bad for all societies

These are my favorites, they meld so well with modern Western societies that value human rights.

    10. Islam commands that drinkers and gamblers should be whipped.

    9. Islam allows husbands to hit their wives even if the husbands merely fear highhandedness in their wives.

    5. Islam commands that homosexuals must be executed.

    4. Islam orders unmarried fornicators to be whipped and adulterers to be stoned to death.

    3. Islam orders death for Muslim and possible death for non-Muslim critics of Muhammad and the Quran and even sharia itself.

    2. Islam orders apostates to be killed.

    1. Islam commands offensive and aggressive and unjust jihad.

  • Sommelier

  • angry_pickle

    The full quote is

    (5) I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. (6) If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

So what fruits can humans give birth to? Peaches? Plums? It is an analogy. It isn't literally throwing nonbelievers into a fire.

Unlike the Quran, it isn't normal to literally interpret the Bible. It is the spirit and not the words that count.

quoting the old testament? really? neither a synagogue nor a christian denominated church is being built but a mosque.

"Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it." -Winston Churchill

  • Winston said lots of things about different people. Were they all true?

  • TK

My quote is from 1899 and taken from a book written by Churchill about the war in Sudan. Think about the change in Western cultures, especially for women, since 1899 through today. Its not perfect, not even close, but women are better of today than they were in 1899 in my opinion. Can you say the same for women in Muslim or Islamic cultures? Maybe not to same degree of course. And that was my original point. Palin gets to be a political leader while still a complete dingbat because of the freedom, education, property ownership and political power of women in western cultures.

  • I agree that any group that defines their society by set in stone religious rules will have a hard time reforming them to live in the modern world.

we put people on the moon, we communicate on the internet...what do thousand year old religious texts say about our world? not much IMO.

That said, IMO womens role in muslim countries is not as black and white as the west views it.

here's a video from the doha debates about women and islam.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9CHEhZL0OA

    it's a good video.

note that 'Free will' which is something we take for granted as absolute is considered less important than family. This is just a muslim thing but can be found it other non-secular groups. I don't agree with this, but its a good video to see the issue from the muslims perspective.

  • l3iodeez

So if a synagogue or a church was being built you would oppose that too?

Because then I agree with you.

REVOKE RELIGIOUS TAX EXEMPTION! Tax the churches, mosques, synagogues, yeshivas, madrassas, seminaries and any other organization that turns a profit.

  • SP's Ghost

You hypocrite. You quote the Koran, yet the same misogynistic crap exists in your Judeo Christian religions. The new testament is full of intolerance and violence too. Your arguments would hold some water if you also were calling for the removal of churches, but you aren't.

  • TK

Actually I dont think its appropriate for the government to sponsor or authorize any religious symbol to be displayed in the space.

Mainly my issue lies with the feigned tolerance by the CB in allowing a mosque to locate itself in the space. If it was a $100 million Mormon temple, Scientology church or Southern Baptist church (or worse a new NRA HQ or BP HQ) would the CB authorize the permits or would the politics change? I dont know by I am scared of the answer.

A college educated woman- Married only once and with a family- Mother of 5 Children- and now a grandmother. . . was an executive of a municipality- and then, was the Governor of the State of Alaska! Espouse fiscally responsible administrative ideals and- ran for the Vice-Presidency of the United States of America!

So- what's so bad about her. . . other than she sticks in the pusses of Democrats who haven't got anything to of substance to point to regarding the foolish policies of current incompetent and failing administration. . . except to attack her personally on: What? All of the above and- She's good looking in the bargain!
