"Sexist" PETA Ad Banned

phpCDZmC3AM.jpg

Pam Anderson has taken it all off for PETA in the past, but this time she's getting censored... in Canada. Her latest campaign for the organization was deemed sexist by Canadian officials, and when she flew to Montreal yesterday to unveil it, she found out that they were refused a permit to place the ad in the city. Anderson, who was born in Canada, declared: "In a city that is known for it's exotic dancing and for being progressive and edgy, how sad that a woman would be banned from using her own body in a political protest."

PETA thinks officials confused "sexy" with "sexist"—but the ad does portray the star as a piece of meat. In it, she's wearing a bikini and her body is covered in what looks like a butcher's diagram (markings that distinguish her ribs, rump, etc). No word on where the ad will end up... would New Yorkers allow it?

The organization has used naked women to get their message across in the past—the Daily News has a gallery—but have never so clearly marked them as a piece of meat.

the PeTA ad is showing a woman as a piece of meat in order to show that women (and animals) are _not_ just pieces of meat.

    hey, that's sexist!

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Canada probably hates PETA for demonstrating against them clubbing seals. :(

  • Boogie Down

Felix, we've gone over this before. The vast majority of Canadians oppose the seal hunt. You speak of the slaughter as though it's supported by every single person in that massive country, which it is not. You know, it's kind of like how thinking Americans were opposed to the slaughter of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians. Just because the government permits certain actions doesn't necessarily mean it's supported by the majority of the population.

As for Mr. Know-It-All, you'd probably be interested to know that one of the most "redneck" provinces permitted public toplessness loooooong before NYC.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

When I say Canada, I meant the govt. The same govt that ban this ad. Where do I state all Canadians support the seal hunt. In fact, a poll was taken in Canada and a majority don't support the clubbing of seal. But it is their asshole Prime Minister Stephen Harper who supports this cruelty and evem ate seal to show his support.

  • Boogie Down

Oh yeah, lots of people up there think he's a grade A a-hole as well. Anyway, some time ago you and I discussed this issue. Glad you're aware that there's often a BIG difference between public opinion and government policy.

Do you know which specific level of government is responsible for this ban (i.e. City of Montreal, Province of Quebec, etc.)? I really doubt this is the doing of Harper's conservative government. It seems like more of a local issue, which is odd since Montreal has a little red light district.

Another question for you - do you know anything about the fate of that poor dog in Williamsburg? I figured you'd be the man to ask.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

No, unfortunately I don't and the ASPCA HLE doesn't provide details to the public when the case is under investigation. I hope Gothamist calls for an update on the dog. I think the dog is dead because in other cases where dogs survive such brutal attacks, the ASPCA send out emails to help fund his/her medical treatment.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

But i will ask around this weekend. poor dog

  • Mr. Know-It-All

Good. I'm all for more toplessness. But they're two different issues. Permitting public toplessness is a libertarian issue that simply limits government control of personal liberty. I come from a long line of New England rednecks and it's not surprising to me that a bunch of rednecks would not want the government interfering with their right to go topless. On the other hand, the government deciding what types of speech are impermissible because they might offend protected classes of citizens is an example of a liberal policy (anti-discrimination law) becoming illiberal (government interference with free speech).

  • Boogie Down

Hey, I agree with you. I just thought you'd find it interesting. For the record, however, Canadian rednecks are a whole different breed (also, there are rednecks in New England? j/k). They don't tend to be all fanatical about limited government interference, but are usually classified as rednecks because they drink crappy beer, listen to country music, drive stupid pick-up trucks, and generally aren't well-educated. I think that many Americans would still consider them pretty liberal when it comes to political ideology. Shit, gay marriage has been legal in Alberta (the last province to pass it into law) for seven years, I think, and that's probably the most redneck part of the country.

  • Mr. Know-It-All

I'll try to remember this the next time someone starts to tell me how much more like Canada we should be. Whatever you think about PETA, at least the U.S. government hasn't yet (that I know of) started banning speech it deems "sexist." Unbelievable.

  • Såkandulæredet

now you, are a thinking man.

  • fuboy

I don't really care for the ad or Pam, but just because other women don't want to be objectified shouldn't hinder those that do.

  • Cannibal

You know what turns me on most about her?

Hepatitis C!! Mmmmm... incurable sexually transmitted disease.... so hot!!!

  • Guest

just remember to wear a wet-suit.

  • HBHB

Being a piece of meat is the entire point of the ad. Man, people are stupid.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

So France is banning burqas and Montreal is banning nudity. The French are so confusing.

  • Christine Quinn's Sushi Fund

the quebecois are not french and would take that as an insult, as would the french.
