East Village Cupcakery Shuttered For "Illegal Sidewalk Cafe"

071310cupcake.jpg Cupcake shop Butter Lane (whose cupcakes are the best thing Ted Allen ever ate!) was shut down yesterday because tables outside counted as an "illegal sidewalk cafe." Owner Pam Nelson complained to the Post, "When people see the sign, they assume there are rats in our cellar and we are being closed by the Department of Health. This really hurts." But until they open again on Thursday, they're paying it forward. They wrote on Twitter, "Since you can’t have a cupcake, try Taureau for fondue!" As long as it's not Crumbs...

let's see..... is the Charleston in WILLIAMSBURG BROOKLYN a LEGAL SIDWalk cafe????????

Word on the street sez is is NOT. so who's doing anything about that?

  • wobbleSmith

call 311. i wouldn't swear to it, but they'll probably take your complaint, register it with the right city department and give you a incident number to track it. maybe. they do it with buildings issues. this might classify. or it might not.

i guess the point is YOU could do something about it.

i did in my old building and the city levied at hefty fine on the building owner. and since money is the only thing people respond to, i feel pretty happy about that.

Crumbs (like Magnolia) is highly overrated....try Two Little Red Hens on the UES instead! Delicious!

Can these amazing people who shut down the illegal sidewalk cafe come shut down the dozen of them within a 5 block radius of my apartment? It would be really nice if the sidewalk could be more than three feet wide.

  • SohoTimmy

    Exactly #1.

  • wobbleSmith

that's right, honey. get all indignant because you got busted for not playing by the rules.

  • Mr Mel

It has nothing to do with the rules. It has to do with Pam's not going to the local Democratic Club and "reasoning " with them. A few Bob left in a desk drawer would have been the salve that was necessary to heal the abrasion.

Congratulations: One of the most nonsensical comments ever posted here!

It has nothing to do with politics or the Dems, my hateful friend. It has to do with the Dept of Consumer Affairs.

It has to do with the fact that she was expropriating precious sidewalk space without paying rent for it.

She was too cheap to pay the City and its citizens the $5,000 a year rental fee, and so it cost her $15,000 in lost revenue. She is basically a scammer, a deadbeat. Stiff your landlord and you too will get punished. That's capitalism, old boy.

So, she'd rather whine to the NY Post and get sympathy from some on Gothamist who haven't a clue, just gratuitous partisan polemics. Sad.

  • Mr Mel

Two things, one is that I am entitled to an opinion, that in it self doesn't make me hateful. Secondly, are you saying there is no corruption in local politics?

  • wobbleSmith

    hah hah. riiiiiiiiight...

    RIP accountability
