Four Murders In Six Hours On Sunday

July weekends are turning out to be deadly periods for the city, as four people were murdered in the course of a few predawn hours on Sunday. Just after midnight, Nazario Bleu was shot in the torso near the Pelham Parkway Houses in the Bronx. A second man was shot as well, though he managed to reach a nearby building to call 911, and remains in stable condition. Bleu was declared dead at the scene. Unfortunately, this was just the first of the night's shootings.

About an hour later, police were called to Kosciuszko Street and Tompkins Avenue in Bed-Stuy, where they found Jamel Johnson, 23, fatally shot in the head after a block party nearby. Two other men were found shot in the leg, and are now in stable condition. Around 2:45 a.m., the third murder occurred at East 172nd Street in The Bronx, when Rafael Otero, 27, was headed home from a party with his girlfriend and her daughter. His girlfriend told the Daily News that the party had been for "Spanish only," and a fight broke out when a group of black people showed up. Cops showed up and told Otero to leave, but then "[The perps] chased after him and shot him." His girlfriend said, "I try to help him, but there is so much blood rushing from his neck and I already see his eyes rolled back in his head."

The fourth murder occurred around 6:30 a.m. on 135th Street and Liberty Avenue in Queens. Barri Jahoor, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived and found him shot several times in the torso. Neighbors say the killing happened outside a party at a barbershop, and detectives suspect it may have been a robbery gone wrong. Shortly after Jahoor's murder, a man checked himself into Jamaica Hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach. Police are investigating whether the two incidents may be related. One local told NY1, "I'm scared cause it's not safe. You can't even walk in the daytime and when it's nighttime this happens -- people robbing and shooting all over."

This comes after three killings on Friday: A man was killed near the Walt Whitman Houses in Brooklyn; a man was killed after a fight in a East Harlem pool; and a man was found shot dead in the Bronx in the evening. According to the latest NYPD statistics (through June 27), murder is up 11.1% from last year, with 221 murders so far this year, compared to 199 last year. Overall crime is down 1.32%.

People could say what they want and pass judgement but some of these people were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I knew bleu and he was a good kid. One is entitled to enjoy their lives regardless of what time it is. I know for a fact he was not out there looking for trouble. Some of you people could keep cracking your lil jokes but you obviously are to ignorant to understand the pain the family and loved ones r going through until you experience this which i know most of you will but hope you don't..Bleu u will always be missed we love you kiddo..My condolences to his family cause if wee r hurting I can imagine your pain.

June 27th's stats reports are still showing up. There has to have been atleast 30 homicides since then, so what's taking the NYPD so long to release the updated forged stats?

Bloomberg pays for these numbers to magically disappear, so what's holding them up from simply adding up the murders, and subtract 50% from the real total.

  • Wza

    Yep.

All last year when murders were at record lows, the compstat figures would not be a week or so behind. This year, different story.

  • 40oz.killa

Uh oh. Time for me to buy some guns and a bulletproof vest.

So at what point will these spineless reporters that cover City Hall dare ask Bloomberg and Ray Kelly why crime is going up under their watch and what they're doing about it?

And please no more silly "Stop & Frisk" operations or more quotas that don't stop anything but Police Officers from doing more substantial police work or asking for more IDs at Housing Projects to catch a few visitors and charge them as trespassers , but real police work that leads to lowering the crime wave we're experiencing in this city.

Or is it ok and acceptable until the victim is a pretty jogger in Central Park?

Illegal House Parties are too blame for many of these recent killings, people charge a small admission fee for unlimited beer and some food and these parties go on until 3am, 4am and even later? earlier? 6am.

Like my grandfather once told me, NOTHING GOOD EVER HAPPENS AFTER 1am.

  • No Brain Stem

    I love king Bloomberg.

Only a court of law can make the determination that someone was murdered. They were killed, shot, etc, but not murdered (yet).

  • Petey

Just a few homicides (or suicides)

This is what happens every time the economy fumbles & the city (or any other community) dismantles social service programs in the name of saving a few bucks. Sadly, we can expect more as long as the recession continues....

  • areyoutuffenuff

So you're saying that these thugs would take advantage of all the after-school programs and community workshops I'm sure they were using before they got cut? If that's the case maybe the city and state should stop making it their priority to drive high income earners out of the city and their taxes could still be used to keep these programs open.

  • hotstepper

    *cough* bullshit *cough*

  • Bottomless Chips

It's sad that people who think like you run the federal, state and local governments.

  • Petey

So we should pay people through govt handouts to not kill people?
