Stringer Will Marry in CT Because Gays Can't Marry in NY

071010stringer.jpg In a personal act of protest against New York's stance on same-sex marriages, Manhattan BP Scott Stringer and fiancee Elyse Buxbaum will get hitched in Connecticut. He told the Times he "can’t imagine not being in this city," but his anger over the state's rejected same-sex marriage bill is enough for him to take his vows elsewhere. He said, "If enough people who have somewhat of a profile — not just politicians, but artists and business leaders — start going into Massachusetts or Connecticut and show New York how embarrassing it is that you can’t get a marriage license for same-sex couples, then we will change things."

Buxbaum said she felt guilty celebrating their marriage in a city where her gay friends couldn't enjoy the same benefits. "I started to feel terrible,” she said. "I was sharing something that not everybody could have." Stringer said, "We both agreed it was the right thing to do." The couple will still hold a ceremony in New York City in September, but will obtain their marriage license and have a civil ceremony in Connecticut a few days before.

very good point, AngryGod - aside from just treating everyone the same, why would any state turn away money?

I'm engaged, gay, live in NYC, all my friends & family are in NYC - and I'm spending $25k (our budget, but let's get real, who stays in budget?) in Connecticut or Massachusetts - just on principle! Because, sure, I could just have a quickie ceremony in Stamford & head back to party in NYC, but why the fuck would I want my dollars indirectly going towards the likes of Diaz? Also, denying us gay marriage in our home state neither stops us from being gay, having relationships and getting married. all it does is make us angry and bitter. not sure what the point of that all is.

And a side note - do you have any idea how LAME CT wedding venues are? Stringer should try to plan a wedding in CT - that'll make him flip his lid.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Diaz is an easy target but there were 37 other votes against that bill. What is funny is how Christine Quinn gave people the impression that Sen Flanagan would vote yes when not ONE republican voted yes. Sen. addabo, who was once in the city council, voted NO. The movement needs to be careful who they trust and especially who they bankroll in the coming elections. Christine Quinn is an Al Sharpton. Just makes press lines but no action. She sold out may years ago. Now she joins the rallies whenever they is an attack on a gay person but does nothing in the legislation. Governor Paterson has passed a few good bill for transgender and also for anti-bullying due to one's orientation.

QUINN HAS DONE NOTHING and yet she is the 2nd powerful person in the city.

  • ANGRYGOD11

WTF? Quinn has no power nor vote in Albany. Calling her the second most powerful person in NYC is like calling me the second best basketball player around if I was the only other person in an elevator with LeBron.

  • inoyourider

Does his fiancee have a secret 'down there'?

  • ANGRYGOD11

He should have pointed out the money that's leaving NY and being spent in another state. Weddings are a multi-billion dollar industry and Albany is in no shape to ignore it.

not just politicians, but artists and business leader

Oh gee, we should really follow the example of politicians, artists, and business leaders. They truly are the most upstanding citizens. Give me a break. Looks like two attention whores drumming up votes and social party invitations.

  • ozik

Wait, are you saying that they are wrong to act ethically? Or are you saying that whatever they do is automatically wrong? I'm confused.

  • angry_pickle

No, I'm saying these two attention whores are doing it for attention and approval. They would never do this if it didn't get them social attention and approval.

    Bravo. And, mazel tov.

  • I was like "BP! What!" Then I did the math on "Borough President." Still, mean to associate ANYONE with the BP trainwreck.

  • phil_s_stein

It wasn't a train wreck doofus! It was on the water!

  • I don't want to besmirch the honorable name of the GI Joe Shipwreck.
