Mosque Near Ground Zero Faces One Last Challenge

070210mosappr.jpg Last night the landmarks committee on Manhattan's Community Board 1 voted against recommending landmark status for the old Burlington Coat Factory building at 45-47 Park Place. This address is where Cordoba House is planning to build a mosque and community center, a project that has some people up in arms because it would be two blocks from the WTC site. It's unclear how many blocks away the mosque would need to be to appease the opposition, but last night the plan won a key victory from CB1, and on Tuesday it faces the final hurdle at a Landmarks Commission hearing about the building.

That's open to the public [pdf], so opponents will have all weekend to prepare for what's sure to be a civil, rational exchange of ideas. Of course, the mosque has become a talking point for the gubernatorial election this fall—Rick Lazio says Attorney General Andrew Cuomo should investigate the legality of the mosque's funding sources but he (Lazio) won't comment on whether he opposes it. For his part, Cuomo agrees with the Community Board's approval and points out that this country was founded on "religious freedom."

My reference is a good friend of mine who lives in the UK. He is an ex-muslim. They get Arabic channels in the UK and he told me this has been discussed on those channels. They ARE smirking over this, praising to Allah that the mosque is built and there were plenty of callers on one particular show that were donating money. Where do you think the money is coming from? Wake up New Yorkers and stop the construction of this mosque. Do it for the rest of the Americans who are against it.

So we should engage is a holy war cause some one you know saw a thing once?

Jews make women sit in the back behind a fence. They aren't aloud to say anything even at their parents funerals. Should we stop them from worshiping the way they choose as well?

If you don't care for religious freedom you don't care for America. We have been too strong for too long to embrace knee jerk protectionism because you and your cowardly ilk don't care for freedom.

Last year there was a convention in a Chicago suburb where muslims stated their case for sharia law in the United States. The convention center was packed full of muslims, with the women sitting in the back, as usual. Listening to them was very disturbing. Not all muslims want to take over the world but TOO MANY of them do. We need to WAKE UP, pay attention to what is happening in Europe. This subject is being talked about on Arabic tv. They are smirking over this and many muslims are willing to donate money to get this mosque built. The rest of us in America are counting on you New Yorkers to STOP THIS, so STOP IT.

the landmarks commission doesn't regulate use. even if this building were voted a landmark, it would not stop it from becoming a mosque. the commission can only regulate what happens to the facade, not inside.

Jacque, these clowns continue to lead the people by the noses. They create diversions to prevent the people to unite and drag bloomberg, Quinn, lazio and all the rest out of their offices and beat their asses good. Where is the revolution? I'm ready and williing and able. And I don't mean to clean up the streets as the Doe Fund people. The same. ones bloomberg paid to testify on his behalf to extend term limits. Lazio is the last one to question the money trail when he was one of the biggest lobbyist for the banks and they hire him as a kickback.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Lazio? Lol. The man who won't disclose his bonus from JP Morgan after we bailed them out. And we should be happy that there is at least one thing bring built in that area without our money. We gave Silverstein a billion dollar loan when he can't get any financing. Also we are subsidizing future tenants to move in his new buildings.

so right on all points. Eff Lazio.

I'll figure out the math once I locate one of those great muslim mathematicians the president wants nasa to recognize, but until then how many blocks is to mecca? that would be about right.

  • Yeah, seriously: Arabian mathematics advances! HA HA WHAT A JOKE. Oh-- oh wait, I'm being told they pretty much invented math; gotcha. Sorry.

  • JacqueMehoff

what landmark? they didn't protect it then why protect it now? oh yeah, it was a burlington coat factory.

I thought crazy guy was kyle maclachlan who let himself go. go crazy, that is.

This is a "victory" mosque and intended to run salt into the wounds of 9-11-01. If you can't see that, you're a politically correct, naive fool. Muslims, however, would call you a dhimmi.

  • joec79

Well, I'm proud to live in a country where the letter of the law and basic civil rights take precedence over the knee-jerk reactions of chauvinistic buffoons. We're either a country whose founding principles are its first priority, or we're not. You can't have it both ways, and the people who want the Constitution to be arbitrarily applied in some cases and not in others--I don't know what those people think the United States is all about, but theirs must be a far less impressive, far less exceptional America than the one I call home. So if "the Muslims" are trying to rub salt in the wounds of 9/11, at least as far as I'm concerned, they're failing pretty miserably.

  • FDTW

The terrorists who attacked on 9/11 want to destroy America. If we start violating the constitution to spite religious groups we're saving al Queda the trouble of building more bombs- we're destroying the foundations of our country ourselves.

  • If we're politically correct, what is the flip side-- politically racist? Politically unable to understand the Constitution? I'll handle being correct. Somehow I'll bear that burden.

  • paulie

There's a church a few blocks from the Oklahoma City Memorial. What's the difference? There's billions of Muslims on the planet, lots of them in New York. Get over it.
