Video: Prospect Park Trashed After 4th

Summer in the city means more trash in the parks—something Brooklynites were reminded of last year when Prospect Park kicked off the season with a nice thick layer of garbage. After 2009's July 4th holiday, we received plenty of photos documenting the littered fields, and later in the summer an unauthorized BBQ brought in even more trash and a rat infestation. But it's no surprise that last year may seem like nothing compared to this year's trashpocalypse, as the park's already been plagued with all sorts of weird discoveries in recent months. And yesterday the Brooklyn Paper's watchdog Gersh Kuntzman took his bike through the area to find this disaster awaiting him:

This afternoon we received the following statement from the Parks Department's Adrian Benepe, regarding not only Prospect Park but all city parks:

“The July 4 holiday weekend, fireworks display, and the extremely hot weather together made for a triple-whammy as huge crowds flocked to the city’s beaches, pools and parks.

More than 2.4 million went to the city’s 14 miles of beach over the three-day weekend, with more than 1.1 million on Monday alone, watched over by a large municipal lifeguard corps. The 54 outdoor pools were filled to capacity, and tens of thousands more made use of spray showers in over 450 parks. Massive crowds also arrived at all the traditional picnic and barbecue spots.

At Prospect Park, clean-up crews were out working in the park every day of the long, holiday weekend from 5 am until midnight as thousands of park goers enjoyed picnicking and barbecuing from early in the morning to late in the evening. The clean-up continues all day today and throughout the week and the summer ahead, and we ask for New Yorkers to pitch in by carrying trash to the receptacles provided and leaving it neatly placed next to the receptacles if they fill up.

Don’t dump your coals near a tree because it will kill its roots. Recycle your bottles and cans. And remember, every time you re-use a water bottle, that’s one less plastic bottle going to a landfill.”

Sounds like a major advertising / goodwill opportunity for a trash bag manufacturer to hand out a few thousand free samples to park goers during the holidays and weekends.

Of course, Disney offers one possible solution:

Sunset Park looked the same on the 5th, it's was astoundingly disgusting. Bags were ripped open, and in one instance, it looked like the pile had been set on fire. WTF is wrong with people.

It looks like he's at the Parkside Avenue side of Prospect Park. I lived there for about 4 years and it's ALWAYS filthy over there. After any weekend in the summer there are garbage cans overflowing with trash. It gets far less TLC then the rest of the park.

As horrible as it is to say, in this city, I've noticed flagrant littering by one race in particular. There I said it without really saying it but you know who I'm talking about.

  • SatelliteTimes

eh, they could have all the garbages in the world out there & these entitled pigs would still toss their stuff on the ground. I've seen it MANY times.

While we're on the subject, what's the DEAL with people that can't properly dispose of their iced coffee cups? Start counting how many iced coffee cups you find abandoned per day...

The prospect park of the 90s was full of needles and crack vials and diddlers. Now it is full of breeders and hipster douchbags and their douchy trash. Choose your poison...

Prospect Park was filled with waaaaaay more people than just hipsters and breeders. Trust me, I was there a lot this past weekend, and that mob consisted of a lot more than people than just new wealth and transplanted Midwesterners.

either way, its all trash to me

The policy in the National Park System requires visitors to carry out what they carry in. Time to adopt such a policy in the NYC Parks...with stiff fines for violators.

That's always been the credo of all responsible hikers and campers. It's also part of the Tread Lightly campaign. Basically, try to leave no trace when you leave.

The problem is that way too many people nowadays feel disenfranchised. They feel the world hasn't handed them everything on a platter, so they don't owe the world anything.

You should've seen the parking lot at Riis beach yesterday morning. Filthy.

i was in prospect park on july 4th. i bought an italian ice. after i realized i dont like italian ice it took me 10 minutes to find a trash can to throw it out.

  • asane

My guess is that most of that trash was actually in or piled on the garbage bins, but because of the holiday, were rummaged by animals at night before they were able to be disposed of by the park service. There are a lot of ripped open and empty garbage bags - looks like raccoons to me.

amazing how they camp out and set up shop to party at 6AM on Saturday then trash the place. if the parks needs more funding, maybe they should consider ticketing after fireworks for the lazy dumb f*cks that lack basic common sense.

  • woodendesigner

I really wish the city would get off it's ass and be prepared to ticket the hell out of people that do this. The city would rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars. People will only learn in this town if they are held accountable on the spot and fined heavily for their bad habits. Nobody I know would leave mountains of trash laying around like this. It's shameful.

  • Cannibal

I agree. Instead of ticketing people who ride bikes on sidewalks and jaywalk.

  • pal

    Hey Gersh,

You should film the same area the day before showing the disgusting pigs who made this mess and include that in your video. These people need to be sited and shamed.

  • succubus

Flushing Meadows Park was similarly littered. Plus I saw people washing their meat in the water fountains. (Who doesn't prepare meat at home for barbecuing?) Basically people were using the park as an extension of their homes, and expected cleanup service from the Parks Dept.

  • Bongo23

Wow! And I thought Coney Island Beach looked bad yesterday morning. Really people, is it too much to ask you to carry your crap 50 feet to a trash can. Pigs.
